As the 7th anniversary of Mushy's military take over went by quietly, truth remains to be told. We have discussed this issue in various topics but its time we put it all together here. So launching this thread to do one thing i like the most

First tell us, what you think about the coup?

Was it justified?? Did ganga with artificial hair really had to go? (pun intended)

Meray aziz humwatno, I am also writting book. Tittle is undecided, haw about “In The Hairline of Fire”? Or “Hairline Under Fire”? Or “In The Line” meaning that after Mohtarma I am coming. Or “In The Fire” meaning what what I have been through. Or “In The Loon” with Urdu subtittle “Paagal khanay mein” meaning what it is like to be prime minister with faujis. Or “In The Liar of Fine” meaning their lies that Pakistan is doing fine, doing fine, doing fine. Names there are many but arthur there is only one. And it is your brother, meray aziz humwatno.

Every arthur has to write on computer so I have learnt computer. I am receiving and sending emails. Which I am sending to men they are hemails and which I am sending to women they are shemails. All my faithful flowers in PML N are sending me hemails and shemails with result that my andar vala dabba (inbox) is always fool. I try and dispose of all my emails quickly so that my bahar vala dabba (outbox) is empty. I have learnt all commands on computer. I hear Praiz Musharraf also learnt all commands on computer before he became arthur but he has reconfigured them in fauji language. FILE is Forward March! SEND is Dismiss PM, VIEW is From Kargil Heights, TOOLS is Nuclear Bombs, HELP is Dear Dubya, EDIT is No Mention of 1971, TRASH is Ruddy Civilians, RECYCLEBIN is Pakistan Muslim League, SENTITEMS is Nawaz and Benazir, CC is Corps Commander, BCC is Blind Corps Commander and so aan.

I have much simpler system. I have translated all computer commands into Punjabi and that is how I can remember them. SEND is sutto. INSERT is vich pao. EDIT is sidha karo. ATTACHMENT is naal laao. FORWARD is aggay sutto. VIEW is vekhi jao. DELETE is daffa karo. TRASH is mitti pao. PROPERTIES is jaidad. DOWNLOAD is thhallay lao. WINDOW is bari kholo. CONNECT is naal milao. FIND is labbo. RUN is bhajjo. SETTING is kuri nu phhasao. HELP is Abbajiiii! CTR+ALT+DELETE is sara syapa mukao.

Allah hafiz,

My point is simple. There should be no place for military leader in Pakistani politics be it Mushy, Zia, Yahya, Ayub and those who have yet to come.

12th October was a pre-planned operation by our army. What NS did was to save himself and the constitution gave him every right to fire the army chief. The plane hijacking case was a drama staged by the establishment. Mushy has himself said this in his book that army would not have allowed another chief to be changed.

Ch Nisar in his recent interviews to Hum TV has given a lot of insight over what happened and the events which lead to the take over. He said Mushy was a very obedient officer and considered NS as the captain of the ship. But it was the team of three other generals (who where behind Kargil Fiasco) created misunderstandings between NS and Mushy. They threatened Mushy that NS would make minced meat out of them over the Kargil issue and the four of them would be court martialled. At the same time another team was working on NS to take action against Mush.

Another info that NS got was of a mock coup exercise conducted by the army officers. In which a team of officers visited president house, parliament house, prime minister house, Radio station and PTV station. Ch. Nisar said this info was leaked purposely to NS

It was Mushy's lust for power like his predecessors which lead to the coup. it was personal vendetta and a sense of fear. Mushy has said in an interview, that NS would have been prime minister today had he not removed him (This shows mushy was not willing to take of his uniform).

NS is often blamed for destroying Pakistans economy and bringing Pakistan to a near default. But they forget that in those days Pakistan was facing sanctions over nuclear tests and secondly we had to fight a war which our nation could not afford (If Mushy is so fond of wars why didnt he start one when he took over. beacuse its altogether a different situation when one is himself in that position). This situation continued till 9/11, when all of a sudden things turned upside down. Sanctions were lifted, aid was flowing in and foreign investment was encouraged. We should keep in mind Pakistans economic condition before and after 9/11.

Mushy's policy is more or less the same as that of NS. the projects which Mushy claims to be an achievement of his government were actually started by NS.

I had no idea of coup in 1999: Sharif

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said he had "no idea" of the military coup by then Army chief Pervez Musharraf which dethroned him in 1999.

"I was sitting in Prime Minister's House when the television went off and I heard that the military was around and then I saw military entering and surrounding my office," Sharif said in an interview to ARY television.

He said meanwhile his wife Kulsoom telephoned him and asked him about the situation and later General Mahmood entered the Prime Minister's House with dozens of armed guards and asked him and his brother Shahbaz Sharif to go with him.

When he asked Mahmood why the military had taken over Prime Minister's House, the latter replied, "Don't you know the military has taken over because you changed the army chief?"

Sharif said that later he and Shahbaz were taken to Rawalpindi in a vehicle with tinted glass, the Daily Times reported.

He gave the Army immense support during the Kargil adventure though Musharraf had "deliberately hidden some aspects of the Kargil war from me". "Even then I took all the blame and saved the army. I didn't ask President Clinton to call me in Washington and resolve the Kargil dispute, it was Musharraf who pressed me to meet Clinton and resolve the Kargil issue," Sharif said, adding that he didn't want to take any action against Musharraf after the Kargil episode because he wanted to move forward.

This was only because Mush didnt want to retire before his time that he violated the constitution and rejected peoples mandate.

After 8 years in power he still wants a few more years.

October 99 coup was unexpected, I remember channel hopping on TV in London and all of a sudden BB comes on the screen claiming that a civil war is raging in Pakistan. There was complete news black out and BB being in London was being interviewd in a hurry.

In aftermath of the coup and subsequent travels to Pakistan, discussions with the retired Army Officers etc I came to the conclusion that unless you were a part of the General Staff, you would not know for sure and it is just guesswork.

Nawaz Sharif was on the "high" after having sucessfully removed the Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, replaced Jehangir Karamat as Army Chief and finally replacing the president Leghari. All that was needed was to get the 15th ammendment passed thru the Senate. This would have consolidated his family rule over Pakistan for the next 20 years at least. Nawaz would have liked to emulate Nehru dynasty; Shahbaz after Nawaz and may be Hussain Nawaz Sharif in due time.

Ever since Nawaz and Musharraf fell out over Kargil; Nawaz wanted to get rid of Musharraf and was waiting for a suitable opportunity. He would have probably let Musharraf finish his term and avoided confrontation but Musharraf insisted that TP ( Lt Gen Tariq Pervaiz), a close relation of Raja Nader Pervaiz ( a minister in Shahbaz Sharif's Cabinet ) who acted as a spy for the Sharifs; be forcibly retired because he had met Nawaz Sharif without GHQ's permission required under the Army regulations.

This was which precipitated the decision. Musharraf was ordered to go to Colombo SAARC meet (Indian delegation was headed by a Lt General). According to a very close friend who retired as full colonel but still lives in Rawalpindi and has many course mates in high positions and thus in "the Know":

There was no coup planned as such. Musharraf had however thru 'sixth sense' taken precautions and prepared his two close friends and course mates ( CGS Aziz and Lt Gen Mahmoud, Corps Commander Pindi) for all eventualities. Mush however didnot expect to be sacked while still in the air.

Nawaz Sharif would have succeded if he had chosen a fighting General. Nawaz's mistake was that he chose his "Boot Licker' who was from the Engineering Corps. Nawaz did not realize that officers from the fighting branches of the Army (Infantry, Artillery and Armour) hate to receive orders from the supporting branches officers especailly from the one infamous as a ball lifter of the Sharifs.

It is water under the bridge and no point in arguing whether Nawaz ordered the PIA plane to go to India or whatever. Did Nawaz have constitutional right to sack the Army Chief?? Yes he did. Should he have called Mush to PM's office and asked him to resign instead of announcing his removal on TV ?? Yes he should have.

Whatever may be the real truth, but it reminds me of the late Munir Niazi Punjabi verse " Kuj sahnoo we shauk maran da si".
