Terror mastermind among 11 held in Lahore

LAHORE: The police on Sunday apprehended 11 terrorists, including an alleged mastermind of the recent attacks on Jinnah Hospital and Ahmedis’ worship places in Lahore.

According to police, they conducted a search operation in Shahidra, Muridke and other parts of the city during the last few days, arresting 11 suspected terrorists, believed to have carried out attacks on Ahmedis and Jinnah Hospital.

In addition, huge cache of arms and ammunition, including hundreds of missiles, anti-craft guns, rocket launchers, hand grenades, modern rifles and 23, 000 kilograms of explosives, were recovered from the possession of held suspects.

According to police authorities, this was the largest-ever depot of arms explosives recovered from Lahore. The explosives could have devastated one-third area of the city, police said.

The police further said that terrorists had stored the explosives at three different locations in the provincial capital. But the police was investigating how the terrorists managed to bring such a huge quantity of arms and ammunition in the city.

It seems as though they are trying to put up a full-scale assault on Pakistan within the inside.

Scary.

Suicide bombings are just the beginning. Next it's "pull out the machine guns and fire into the crowd, fire the RPGS, AND THEN blow yourself up."

what slightly worries me is the lack of follow up we have on these stories.

where did the weapons came from? who sold them? who funded this? who is in control of the operations? why are they doing this?

This is not just scary but should serve as an eye opener. It is unlikely that the logistics for such a massive operation can be traced to any country in the neighborhood. Such a magnitude of munition is a pointer that they are being manufactured in havens inside Pakistan. Given that the men are arrested, it is time to bust the network.

LAHORE: Pakistan police have arrested 12 suspected terrorists over attacks on two worship places of the Ahmedi community and a hospital in Lahore, officials said on Sunday.

They were arrested in the suburbs of the eastern city and police also seized “huge quantity of explosive material and weapons from their custody”, deputy chief of police operations Rao Sardar told AFP.

Sardar did not disclose when the arrests were made. In May, suspected Sunni militants wearing suicide vests burst into two Ahmadi places of worship in Lahore and killed 82 worshippers.

At least four people were killed in another attack three days later on Jinnah hospital, where victims from the places of worship were being treated.

Sardar said the weapons seized included rocket launchers, hand grenades and anti-aircraft guns.

Another senior police official, Zulfiqar Hameed, confirmed the arrests.

News of the arrests came three days after twin suicide attacks on a Sufi shrine in Lahore killed 43 people.

Police said they have “apprehended” several people in their investigation into Thursday's bombings, which left a trail of carnage at a shrine dedicated to a Sufi saint.

Lahore has increasingly suffered Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked violence, with around 265 people killed in nine attacks since March last year.

The city is considered a playground for Pakistan's elite and home to many top brass in the military and intelligence community. -AFP

Lahore, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistani authorities said they arrested 12 people in connection with suicide bomb attacks that killed 50 people and injured more than 200 at a Lahore shrine last week.

Ammunition and weapons were recovered during the arrests in two neighborhoods in Lahore, police said.

Officials planned to hold an emergency security meeting Monday to discuss ways to counter militant attacks. Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani called for the meeting Saturday, saying the country cannot afford the "brunt of terrorism."

As public outrage grows, police and politicians are under a large amount of pressure to show results after the deadly blasts that occurred when a pair of suicide bombers detonated their explosive vests outside the Data Darbar, a famous Sufi shrine complex.

One of the bombs detonated in the shrine's courtyard, while the other exploded on the shrine's lower level, police said.

Pakistan's Punjab province, of which Lahore is the capital, has been the scene of carnage in recent weeks, including a bloody attack on a hospital and another targeting Ahmadis.

On Friday, angry Pakistanis -- some wielding guns for revenge -- took to the streets of Lahore in protest. Many are troubled by the spread of bloodshed from the Afghan border areas to the heartland.

They are also concerned that Muslims are attacking Islamic holy sites. Sunni and Shiites do not consider the Ahmadis as a part of Islam because they do not regard Mohammed as the last prophet sent by God. As such, they have been targeted by Islamic extremists.

Thursday's attack was at a revered Sufi shrine. Sufism is an ancient, mystical form of Islam that is generally more tolerant.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan expressed alarm over the attacks and called on both the government and Muslim clerics to stand up to extremism.
