New Delhi: Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday reviewed the security arrangements for various VVIPs and VIPs.

Reports say that around 12 politicians, who were ministers in the UPA regime, are set to lose their security cover. The decision is expected to be announced after the Budget session of Parliament.

During the meet, which was also attended by Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju and Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami, Singh was apprised of the security arrangements for VVIPs/VIPs.

The Home Minister desired that these security arrangements may be reviewed and suitably strengthened, wherever required. Singh further directed that the security audit of vital installations, wherever due, may be carried out and additional forces deployed, if found necessary, so as to ensure that adequate security arrangements are in place for such installations.

The Union Minister desired that the avenues for strengthening bilateral security relations with the neighbouring countries be explored. He desired that efforts be made to ensure that Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) in criminal matters are entered into with as many countries as possible, and specifically with the neighbouring countries.

Great, now go after the Gandhis and remove their SPG cover.

I have often wondered why these gents need security.

What ground breaking deeds have they done that they need protection ?

Compare them with large builders & industrialists who over land & other issues face constant & ever present threats from all sorts of people. They have Gunmen, armed escorts ( often Ex Servicemen & Black Cats) who they pay for .

Why should for instance Lalu or Kalmadi be given any protection ? If they feel insecure they should hire personal guards , why should the taxpayer pay to keep them alive.

In any case the earth will not stop revolving if they die - some other corrupt politician will take their place.

I recall an instance in the maldives while walking with a local friend someone stopped by on 2 wheeler with a child clutching him from behind from the rear seat. My friend & he spoke in Dhivehi . When he drove off I was aghast to learn from my friend that that guys was the foreign minister of Maldives .

Our leaders are ripping us off by staying alive & we pay to keep them alive.

I pray that the remove the covers for:

1- The Gandhis
2- Tarun Gogoi
3- Akhileshullah
4- Mayawati
5- Momta

These are the worst that has happened to Indian politics.

1- Unlikely, this would require a change in the SPG act.

4- PLEASE!!!

@Tshering22

Gandhis are still important, keeping a major party alive and providing an opposition. Also, Mayawati was lot better than the current government, apart from her love for elephants!

Important? Debatable but the point is they don't deserve SPG cover. As for Mayawati the less said the better- building 100s of statues of herself, slapping her security and sending private jets to pick up her sandals- she is a real piece of work.

Gandhis are NOT important.

As MPs, they are entitled to basic protection. SPG act is not written by the Divine and the current govt can change it.

Even Congress officially claims that it is the ideology that keeps them alive. Pappu already said that whether he remains or not the 'great ideology' of Congress will remain. So on the papers, there is nothing that SPG has for protecting them. Till Rajiv and Indira were PMs it was acceptable but not now.

I mean isn't this stupid?

Modi ji's mother, wife and siblings are entitled for SPG protection but refused it but these people who barely hold an MP post are having it.

Important because they are still the biggest leaders in opposition. Without them, the Congressis would eat each other alive. However bad it may look, one big opposition party is necessary for democracy. And for Mayawati, the other option that is currently in power is worse. Unless it becomes Cong vs BJP, she is necessary.

Entire point is, they are big leaders. Corrupt and incompetent or not, their security is of national importance. It is a matter of national image. I remember when recently Canadian PM visited India, he used his own cars in India and gave assassination of Indian leaders as example of weak Indian security. Some things are just for image, whether we like it or not.

False- the mother and siblings are entitled to (and have been given) Z+ cover but are not entitled to SPG cover although his wife is.

Irrelevant, I don't give two hoots about the Gandhis- they can be stripped of their SPG cover (it is unjustifiable to have the executive protection agency charged with PM protection purely to cover this one family ) and IF the threat perception is there ether can be given Z or Y or whatever category protection. I'm not saying they shouldn't be given any protection, just not SPG cover.

Doesn't SPG provides Z class security?
