11.11 MEGA-SALE BREAKS RMB 120 BILLION GMV

After generating RMB 120.7 billion ($17.79 billion) in gross merchandise volume in just 24 hours, the 2016 11.11 Global Shopping Festival, the world’s largest one-day online sale, has come to a close.

That figure represents a 32 percent jump over the RMB 91.2 billion in transactions that played out over Alibaba’s e-commerce platforms—mostly on B2C site Tmall.com and C2C site Taobao Marketplace—last year. In addition, the festival saw a number of other new records set, including RMB 98.97 billion ($14.6 billion) in GMV generated on mobile devices and 657 million delivery orders, compared with $9.8 billion and 467 million, respectively, in 2015. There were also 1.04 billion payment transactions processed compared with 710 million last year.

“This year’s 11.11 is a preview of the future of retail, where entertainment, commerce and interactive engagement intersect seamlessly,” said Daniel Zhang, chief executive officer of Alibaba Group. “From the kick-off of warm-up activities to last night’s countdown gala and all the way through the 24-hour global shopping festival itself, we’ve seen unprecedented engagement between consumers and merchants. 11.11 showcased how online and offline retail will be reinvented to offer brand new shopping experiences to our hundreds of millions of mobile, digitally savvy active users.”

The launch of 11.11 brought with it milestone after milestone as consumers who had filled their online shopping carts in the weeks leading up to the sale clicked “Buy” right at midnight. Total GMV soared past RMB 100 million in just 40 seconds, while it took just six minutes and 58 seconds to reach RMB 10 billion. In terms of U.S. dollars, the $1 billion mark for total GMV and mobile GMV hit at 4 minutes and 54 seconds and 5 minutes 31 seconds into the sale, respectively.

During the first hour, order volume set yet another record with a peak of 175,000 orders in one second, while the number of payments settled per second totaled 120,000 at their height. Last year during the peak of the sale, the communications network run by Alibaba Cloud, the company’s cloud-computing subsidiary, processed 140,000 orders per second.

11.11 isn’t a purely Chinese affair. According to Alibaba, 235 countries and regions completed cross-border transactions during the festival, with thousands of international brands participating. Adidas, Apple, Nike, Pampers, Phillips, Siemens and Uniqlo were all among the most popular in their respective product categories.

Financial metrics aside, Alibaba this year made a significant push outside the realm of pure sales to include increasing levels of interactivity among its platforms, the merchants and consumers shopping at home. Chief among those was a new virtual reality shopping experience, Buy+, in which users could shop and purchase goods in a VR environment. The Hangzhou, China-based company also launched an augmented-reality game, “Finding the Carnival Cat,” a Pokemon Go-style game that allowed players to chase Tmall’s cat mascot into real-world retailers and restaurants such as Intime shopping malls, Starbucks and KFC.

Successful retail in this age requires such a combination of commerce and entertainment, said Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang.

“The young generation born after 1990 is becoming the main source of consumption,” he said. “They have a vastly different lifestyle and consumption pattern.”

High Speed Railway (HSR) trains are joining the battle to deliver goods for the Singles' Day (Nov. 11) shopping spree, in Beijing from Friday.

According to Beijing Railway Bureau (BRB), four daily trains will be running at 160 km per hour to carry goods from Beijing to Shanghai and Guangdong in the next 10 days, shortening each trip to 15 hours, including loading and unloading time.

"Each train has 15 compartments, and can carry 340 tonnes of goods," said Zhang Jinchao, deputy director at the BRB logistics center. "A total of 1,837 tonnes of goods have been transported today, with one of the trains carrying goods sold on JD.com and delivered by SF express," Zhang said Friday.

According to BRB, the center expects to send around 13,500 tonnes of goods and receive 14,000 tonnes during the Nov. 11-20 period, both 80 percent increases compared with a year earlier.

HSR now covers over 500 cities in China, including major cities as well as counties in eastern and central China.

Since the first piece of HSR track was laid in the early 2000s, China's HSR network has seen average 30 percent annual growth in passenger trips, and the network exceeded 20,000 kilometers long as of September, according to China Railway Corp. The network is expected to reach 38,000 km by 2025.

Sales on Alibaba surpassed 10 billion yuan (about 1.47 billion U.S. dollars) in just six minutes 58 seconds after the Singles' Day began, almost six minutes ahead of last year, the company said.

According to China Express Association, over one billion packages are estimated to be transported for the Singles' Day shopping spree, double last year's figure.

Nearly 14 billion packages were delivered in China in 2014, exceeding the United States for the first time.

"People say that e-commerce in China is a miracle, but in my opinion, the fast development of express services in China is the real miracle," said Jack Ma, president of the nation's e-commerce giant Alibaba.

Online shoppers in China reached 447 million by June this year, according to a China Internet Network Information Center report.

"We are selling more goods and delivering them faster. Delivering goods was a headache during Singles' Day five years ago, but now shoppers can receive what they bought in two or three days," said Zhang Yong, Alibaba's CEO.

Cainiao, an express delivery platform using big data, has made it possible for goods to travel faster. Over 70 percent of packages in China use this platform.

"If we don't try a new method and build a stronger logistics network, online retail will be hindered," said Tong Wenhong, Cainiao's CEO.

"Courier services have been renovating the delivery network. Cainiao uses big data to help courier companies optimize the process and improve delivery efficiency," added Tong.

Over 20 billion packages were delivered last year, using more than 2 million delivery staff. Aliresearch has predicted that the number of packages in China will reach 100 billion in the coming five to eight years.

Social logistics now accounts for nearly 11 trillion yuan (about 1.62 trillion U.S. dollars), accounting for 16 percent of GDP last year, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.

The Singles’ Day online shopping festival kicked off on Nov. 11, and the volume of express delivery resulting from the festival is estimated to be over 1 billion packages, according to China’s State Post Bureau. Technology is therefore indispensible for parcel delivery during this period.

Best Express Company has established over 160 cloud warehouses, in which transfer robots will be deployed to collect items. Additionally, 22 automatic sorting systems will be used by the company in 24 provinces and regions, uniting big data analytics, cloud computing, intelligent terminals and image processing.

JD.com, another e-commerce giant, will use drones for parcel delivery in cities including Suqian, Xi’an and Beijing. Liu Qiangdong, CEO of JD.com, said the company has been planning its routes carefully since drones have been authorized to fly in four provinces.

ZTO Express will use its own independently developed automatic sorting system to deal with up to 23,000 parcels per hour. Ni Genyan, the deputy operating manager of ZTO Express, said that just 85 workers can handle nearly 500,000 parcels thanks to the system.

Meanwhile, the Beijing branch of China Railway Express will utilize 200 high-speed trains departing from Beijing, and the Beijing Railway Bureau will specially operate four freight trains for deliveries to Shanghai and Guangzhou, with over 300 tons of cargo being transported by each train. All the express trains can arrive at their destinations the same day as they depart.

Indian e-commerce is decades behind China because their logistics, infrastructure and manufacturing base is weak. Chinese members should praise the Government because without their earlier policies companies like Alibaba would never have succeeded. Alibaba in the next five years will probably buy Amazon.


True, we should have, but in reality, too many Chinese people take this 30 years of unprecedented development in human history for granted. One of my relatives was laughing at "Chinese Dream" just because some of his posts were deleted and other minor inconveniences . Being a multi-millionaire (owning a few condos worth $1 million each, clean and free), he has no idea that he has already fulfilled a dream that is much bigger than "American Dream" , which so many Americans have already given up dreaming.

Though it sounds great to break the world records of single day GMV, it is more important to have e-commerce being developed in a smooth and sustainable pace. It is not economically sound to have excessive capacity just to fulfill the requirement of one single day.

They'd better bring into operation these dedicated high-speed freight trains well before the next 11.11. :rolleyes:

SF is working on a fixed-wing UAV called AirTruck-200 to speed up deliveries to county-level logistic centres. The AT-200 has a range of some 2000km and is capable of carrying up to 1.5-ton of cargoes "per sortie". :enjoy:

This year's total E-commerce sales volume will be at least 20% higher.

Exactly "taken for granted." As if it has happened by sheer accident of history with no constructive input by government officials, workers, academicians, and public servants.

If some posts being deleted is denting one's China Dream to the point of mockery, then they might be opting for an Indian-style corrupt-cracy or US style neo-fascist corporocracy.

Incredible how some people are historically unconscious.

India e-commerce for the year of 2015 is $23 Billion, Alibaba alone 11.11 one day sales is $17.73 Billion.
