101m Indians use internet

With increasing affordability of PCs and internet penetration, the number of internet users in India has reached 101 million while email accounts have gone up to 55 million.

As per the latest report on “Websites and Internet Users in the Country” prepared by Ministry of Information and Technology, internet users in the country has increased to 101 million in 2011 (up to November 31) from 21 million in 2005.

Similarly, the number of websites also increased to 11.2 million in 2011 compare to 1.7 lakh in 2005. The report also says that email accounts have increased to 55 million in 2011 from 11 million in 2005.

Though the number of internet users has been increasing significantly every year, compare to mobile subscribers base, which is 900 million, net users are less. Of the total internet users only 60 per cent of them have access to broadband, sources in the Ministry told Deccan Herald.

In a bid to increase the penetration of internet, the Ministry of IT and Telecom in its draft National Telecom Policy, envisages providing broadband on demand by the year 2015. Besides, the government also aims at achieving 175 million broadband connections by the year 2017 and 600 million by 2020 at minimum download speed of 2 megabits per second.

With the estimation that every 10 percentage point increase in broadband penetration leads to a 1.3 per cent increase in a country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the government also planned to provide high speed and high quality broadband connectivity to all village Panchayats though optical fibre by the year 2014 to deliver the government services to the door stop of common man and to ensure equitable and inclusive growth.

A recent study by Internet and Mobile Association of India and IMRB, a market research firm has said, India’s internet population is expected to grow to 121 million users by December 2011.

Out of 121 million, 97 million are expected to be active internet users, who access internet at least once in a month, says the report.

“A 100 million internet users is considered a critical landmark for the country. With this internet use in India is expected to enter a critical period of growth with the possibility of becoming the largest internet using country in the world in this decade,” the study said.

The study also said that as on March 2011 data, Mumbai with 8.1 million users and 6.2 million active internet user is the top internet using city in the country. Delhi including NCR is second with 6.2 and 5.0 million claimed and active internet users. Interestingly, Kolkata is in the third place and tech city Bangalore is low at number six.
