Here's How to Make the Sahara Desert Green Again

The Sahara is the world's largest hot desert, but parts of it could be made green if massive solar and wind farms set up shop there, a new study finds.

These farms could increase rain in the Sahara, especially in the neighboring Sahel region, a semiarid area that lies south of the giant desert, the researchers said in the study, which was published online Sept. 7 in the journal Science.

"This increase in precipitation, in turn, leads to an increase in vegetation cover, creating a positive feedback loop," study co-lead researcher Yan Li, a postdoctoral researcher in natural resources and environmental sciences at the University of Illinois, said in a statement.

Researchers already knew that wind and solar farms can increase the heat and humidity in the areas immediately around them. But this study is among the first to model how wind and solar farms would affect the Sahara, all while considering how growing green plants and trees would respond to these changes, said Li, who started the study while a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science at the University of Maryland.

Funny enough, I actually have read that and a few other research papers on this topic as I've been quite fascinated by the possibility of the Sahara reclaiming it's lost glory as a lush green Savannah.

But then reality kicks in and you realize that not only will it costs over a trillion dollars, it would also result in the Amazon rainforest losing its core nutrients mineral deposits that it receives from the migration of sand over the Atlantic to south America which has sustained the Amazon rainforest for 1,000s of years.

Reality is always bitter.

There were about 10 more points that I wanted to state here in regards to why the Sahara can't be turned green, but I'm sure I've made my point. Plus I've fractured my hand yesterday.

First of all ...... yes , I admit water and condensed population in the Nile valley and Delta are the main concerns in Egypt .....

that’s why The Government main focus is on
1- building huge modern cities just like the NEW administrative CAPITAL ..... and NEW ALAMIN cities with a huge new roads to connect the whole country together from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean From East , West and through the Nile Delta .

The new High ways that is connecting all Old and new cities of Egypt together that will reduce or even End the regular traffic congestion in Cairo .... about 90% of it has ended ....( without considering other ways of transportation like underground, railways and monorail.

those buildings will be removed as they are illegally built during the period of turmoils after 2011 revolution..... so they will be removed and it’s residents will be reallocated.

I still believe there is a possibility of turning some desert shanks to green land.. not all the Sahara though.. and who needs that anyway..

Stop scaring some people here.. that is the new Egyptian ministry of defence's Octagon..

In fact there are giant industrial projects in petrochemicals, marble, cement, iron, steel, greenhouses, fish farms, developing lakes, roads, new cities, industrial areas in all governorates, financing for small and medium projects, and much more..

Here is a small fact.. but don't laugh..

Poultry in Egypt has investments exceeding $4.5 billion, with 3 million families working directly or indirectly. Egypt has achieved self-sufficiency in poultry by more than 98% with a local production of As domestic production reached 1.2 billion chicks annually, and 14 billion chickens to produce table eggs, due to the increase in production, the application of a biosafety system, the expansion of new poultry investment projects, and the areas of manufacturing and storage, whether by refrigeration or freezing, the volume of imported frozen poultry decreased..

yes bro , one post or thread will not cover it all....

for now , the water installation projects in Egypt producing 1 million cubic meters of water every day .

Also the greenhouses in the desert that will increase the irrigated land and will reduce the water consumption for agriculture by 20%

No any country has unlimited sources such agricultural lands, water, energy, mines etc....All are limited. Technological and scienctic developments cannot make sources unlimited. 30 years later 50% of today jobs will be done by robots and softwares...

High growing population countries like muslim and African countries will suffering tremrndous poverty, unrmployment even pollutions, starvations and lack of water...

Even 30 years later water of Euphrate, Tigris and Nile can only met the drink water of uncontrol growing Arab populations..

Uncontrol growing of an uneducated population is not mean power. It will be poverty, social and political chaos, unployments in the near future..

Planning of population is a must. Otherwise it will turn to such main problems cannot be solved..

Turning desert green... you guys are delusional, you need constant fresh water supply for that, where are you gonna tap that? Also from nile?

Turning desert green... you guys are delusional, you need constant fresh water supply for that, where are you gonna tap that? Also from nile?

To an extent my friend .... Egypt has one of the hugest reserves of the ground water in the world
That may reach 300 BCM ... most of them are renewable water .... with minimum percentage of salt particles.... so it is good for agriculture and drinking.

Knowing that the greenhouses mainly will be at places in the vicinity of the Nile Delta and Valley.... also on the coasts of the Mediterranean and the Red Sea .....

you also need to know a historical fact ..... that the area on the northern west of Egypt on the Mediterranean between ALAMIN city, Marsa Matruh and Salom ..... this area which is huge is a very fertile land and can be irrigated over the raining water .... and it was was the main supplier of the Roman Empire with wheat and other crops ..... but after WWII it was implanted by Tens of millions land mines Which represents 20% of the implanted land mines in the world :(

74DE9FEB-234A-43AF-92F4-3BE5A4FA9CA4.jpeg

Egypt is exerting great efforts in removing those mines ..... to make the maximum use of that important area ..

need to say that the Nile water share for Egypt is 55 BCM/year ....

Egyptian policy makers should make investments and plans to sustain healthy population growth for next century or so. Egyptian population is projected to increase to 160 million by 2050, and 200 million+ by 2100.

If harnessesed properly, this could be the biggest asset Egypt has in coming decades. Water management with Ashwan high dam type projects, more water efficient agriculture, and working hard to bring labor intensive growth sectors to the country should be prioritize.

Don't listen to people who are cucks themselves with dying populations and extremely low fertility rates @ArabianEmpires&Caliphates.

Population, like everything, has to be balanced to extract the maximum advantage out of it. Too low or too high growth is bad. Egypt and other Arab world countries should target 2.5 TFR in the future Inshallah.

.
population itself is blessing for egypt as it will reduce labor cost and will attract foreign investment to develop industries as larger population implies bigger market for companies so it attracts manufacturing

You make it sound as of Turkey is a rich country.
No, we are not. But you cannot deny that we are in a far better situation. What I've meant was that we are the true rulers of this region and some Gulfies with money and puppets cannot change that.

ng seed banks, reintroducing selected species (if necessary), countering erosion through terracing and other measures, enriching the soil with nutrients, drip-agriculture, planting the right trees and shrubs, better integration of land and water management, integrating the land for grazing and farming if conditions are suitable creating an efficient natural cycling of nutrients, drylands aquaculture, greenhouse agriculture (already occurring on a huge scale in Egypt @Amun @Gomig-21 ), effective drip agriculture (same case and related) etc.

Fertility rates will drop eventually as w
May I ask you, how much do you know about seawater desalination plants and the current technological advances and likely future ones that will lower the costs significantly? If Egypt can spend billions of USD on military purchases, nothing stops them from building and managing a few seawater desalination plants. Smaller regional economies (in comparison to KSA) such as Israel can do it. An economy of a similar size (Egypt), bound to be bigger than that of Israel just due to sheer population alone, can surely do that as well.

All it takes is a political will and a vision that you stick to without dragging it out and engaging in corruption in the process.

My previous factual points remain the same.
sooner or later desalination will become very cheap due to a drop in solar prices..cheap enough to support population and agriculture ifno waste is involved
