what a shame how come his parents allowed him there?

His parents did not allow him to go. His father basically kidnapped him.

To think that such things could happen in such a respected family like the Al-Abbasi family I did not believe. But I guess you have bad apples in all families. Even those that were behind the Abbasid Caliphate, belong to the Quraysh and thus the same lineage as Prophet Muhammad (saws) and all the Prophets before him.

there are INTERNATIONAL LAWS in place such as Geneva Convention that categorically ban and outlaw the use of child soldiers - either for conventional militaries or militias/"groups"

Extensive use of child soldiers during WW2 led to the ban of this illegal practice by Geneva Conventions!!!
