I actually only know Mogambo from this

I think I should watch sholay some time though, too many people talk about it

Sholay is actually a good film, very nicely scripted and filmed, in many ways it was ahead of its time (as per the Bollywood standard of that time), for example, the shot where Gabbar kills the entire family of Thakur was brilliantly filmed without the dramatic background music that was the norm at that time.

A stroke of writing genius that can only be pulled off by the great Ajit. Shakaal (Ajit) is a unique villain who has a different shoe size for each foot. Of-course, eventually it is this fetish for not wearing identical shoes that becomes his Achilles heel. But in true 70s style, the plot thickens when Dharmendra notices the unequal shoe sizes on Shakaal’s feet. And this observation is what helps him identify his parent’s murderer.

their part was deliberately toned down to keep our "hero" as the main focus of the movie

but when the screen was not "crowded" with the Hero, these two iconic villains just simply dominated the scene.
there are countless movies where their performance was a masterpiece.

may they rest in peace they will always be my for ever favorites.
