Karachi: According to a report by the Sindh government’s Reform Support Unit (RSU) obtained by Daily Times, in 52 government schools of Karachi, only one teacher is available for over 100 students.

The teacher single-handedly has to teach over a 100 hundred students, leaving a large question mark on the education input and output. The RSU report states, “There are 115 such schools operating under the education department of City District Government Karachi (CDGK), where one teacher is compelled to teach 60 to 90 students on an average.” The names of schools and teacher/students proportion as indicated in the report prepared by RSU are as follows.

The situation is the same in many government-run schools in rural areas here.

.
we need a teachers corps just like the Peace Corps founded by JFKennedy in the 60s. we need to educate the youngsters of Pakistan on a emergency basis - this has got to be one of the 3 to 5 "top priority" for our country. too many urban and rural children are deprived of this "right to education". if children and the general population of Sri Lanka can have a 98% literacy rate, which is fully funded by the govt., why cant we have half of this benchmark as a start. there is no time to lose.

Unless we do away with culture of corruption at different level we cant make this dream come true.

Even if the current money being provided for schools and education is spent properly the situation will be much better.

Well....... when someone from our Govt will realize that we need less Ministers for our Population and More teachers for our Nation that day no body will be left illiterate in Pakistan.

By the way its not SINDH only, it happens in whole Pakistan.

there are more than 45,000 ghost-schools!

.
what should the people do??? that is the question now - dont depend on the govt. u have seen what has happened last night!

Well just remember if the population is uneducated it is so much easier to manipulate by those in power.

As for ghost schools, do they have 1 ghost teacher per 100 ghost students or are these on a better representational basis?
I am sure a ghost teacher cost more.

Ok joking aside. That is a pathetic situation. When I was in China the city there has what was called National schools, Provincial schools and City schools. This just reflected the funding source. They were all taught the same and the classes in junior grades, 5 – 10 YOs about 30 kids. They also have private schools. Here I mean schools that deliver the national teaching courses but run by private businesses/foundations.

So why can not that be applied in Pakistan?

I think it is, there are schools that are run by the government, then there are private schools.

Firstly it depends on what you call government schools.
Are they nationally funded or what?

OK we have government schools and they are national/state funded.
The model I saw in China was one where there were 3 levels of so called government schools. So if you take the City school it was funded by the city not by other sources.
That school was controlled by the city not via state or national centres.

Now with private schools that is some oddity. It also depends on what you call a private school.
Now here, where I am, we have private schools but all students, private and government, have the same curriculum, and sit the same final end of year examinations.
Form one article in the “Daily Times”, yesterday I think it appeared that such was not the case, though this was specific to science.
Our private schools are a mix of church based and non church based. BUT the religious issues in church based schools as an educational component is minor to that of the state/national curriculum.
So how does your model of private school fit with that image?

.
Government school usually means unorganized and weak funding. It's the government's fault that so many receive little or low quality education. Families should be given vouchers to send their kids to private schools.

Private and Government share the same curriculum, the thing with private schools is that its expensive, second the teachers actually teach you.
From personal experience i attended GCU college in Lahore, its the best college in pakistan, but the professors don't teach you anything, they come to class read from a book for a while and then they chat. Where as in a private college they would actually teach you, give you quizzes and tests every week to get you ready for exams. Its the same thing in elementary schools.

Ya in Canada its the same thing, every 1(government/private) share the same curriculum. There are some privte high schools which r not religious related but they are way too expensive. There are Catholic high schools here, they are covered by the government. Then there are Islamic high schools, but you have to pay, and they are private.

there is an ngo called Project 511 which puts volunteers into different govt schools here in hyderabad. once you are a volunteer, you need to allot 1 hour per week to teach kids english. there is also a teach india campaign which tries to address such issue. but politicians are busy alloting reservations to elite institutions where are primary education is ignored mostly. though mid day meal program is good but more has to be done.

What is the state of the union movement in Pakistan? In the US we have teachers unions that pretty much have made the government limit class sizes to the range of 18 to 30 students depending on how wealthy the community is. Typically, an American school district now spends about $9,000 per pupil per year in the public schools. School funding is about 1/2 to 2/3 based on taxing the value of local property in the school district, and the rest from sales taxes collected by the State and federal funding from Washington.

.
TruthSeeker:
If they had a strong union movement face it the politics of the country as a whole would be a lot different than it is today.
So one can easily take it there is no real concept of union as you or I know it.

General question still:
Government schools are they funded at a national level or funded at the province level?

It is not as strange a question as it looks. But so far I don’t seem to have been offered and answer.
