One in four Indians ’suffering’: Gallup poll

The Week | One in four Indians 'suffering': Gallup poll

Story Dated: Monday, May 28, 2012 18:53 hrs IST

Washington: South Asians rated their lives worse in 2011 than most residents in other parts of Asia with nearly one in four Indians "suffering", third highest after Nepal and Afghanistan, according to a new poll.

Including India (24 percent), at least one in five residents in Nepal (31 percent), Afghanistan (30 percent), Sri Lanka (22 percent), and Pakistan (21 percent) rated their lives poorly enough to be considered "suffering", according to a Gallup poll released Monday.

Bangladesh is the only South Asian country where suffering is significantly lower than its regional neighbours, at 10 percent, the leading US opinion pollster said.

Gallup classifies respondents as "thriving", "struggling", or "suffering" according to how they rate their current and future lives on a scale of 0 to 10.

Those who rate their present life a 7 or higher and their life in five years an 8 or higher are classified as thriving, while those who rate both dimensions a 4 or lower are considered suffering. Respondents whose ratings fall in between are considered struggling.

The relatively high levels of suffering in South Asia likely reflect the economic turmoil, war, conflict, domestic terrorism, or separatist movements that have afflicted many of these countries in the past decade, Gallup said.

Additionally, most South Asian countries currently have higher levels of unemployment and corruption and lower levels of college education than the rest of Asia.

Relatively low levels of suffering in Bangladesh may be related to their educational attainment, Gallup said noting it was the highest in South Asia -- 50 percent of the adult population has at least secondary or higher education.

That is an impressive statistic. Well done to Bangladesh.

Pakistan has a pretty low percentage surprisingly, so I guess that makes us the second lowest?

That's right. According to the Gallup poll, Bangladesh has the lowest level of suffering in South Asia, and Pakistan has the second lowest level of suffering in South Asia.

Afghanistan, India and Nepal have the highest levels of suffering.

This is a stupid poll based on self-perceptions and not on any defined metrics. Self-perceptions vary from country to country as what is considered "suffering" by one group may not be considered as suffereing by the other.

In a country like India in which there is a huge upwardly mobile class, a person who is not growing enough might consider himself "suffering"..i.e., a person who is considers himself "suffering" relative to others in India, might consider himself "blessed" when sent to countries like Bangladesh or Afghanistan and sees how they are living.

Based on the report yes. Congrates for that despite all the problem due to war on terror. But it depends on bhutan the country where its people are tagged with happiest people on earth.

Yeah thats why I was a little surprised.

But thats good Bangladesh has a high educational attainment rate. Even before independence, East Pakistan had a higher literacy and educational attainment rate in comparison to West Pakistan.

lol ironically its the same set of people who thought Hasina is doing an excellent job for Bangladesh.

People were laughing at the credibility of that survey but not this. Weird:lol:

That was the poll of 2011... in 1 year ground reality has changed a lot in bangladesh.

N to ks... so based on your logic nobody is suffering in usa? Its country to country based survey. Accept the fact that apart from some western states most of the people are suffering and dirt poor in india. But this is not the case in bangladesh.

Take it to your head that this poll is not based on any set criteria and just based on "perception" of people in various countries. What constitutes "suffering" may vary from person to person, let alone whole countries.

For example if I earn $1000 a month and all my neighbours earn $50000 a month then I will consider myself poor. But if I earn the same $1000 and all my neighbours earn $100, then I would consider myself rich. But the $1000 remains same in both cases.

Got it ?

This is just a dumb poll.

Both the poll were conducted in 2011, and results published in 2012. In fact this survey and the survey which gave Hasina an approval rating of 77% was answered by the same set of people..

Surely more Bangladeshis might be content with their lives, but in the other threads these people were called RAWAMY Dalals, Illegal Indian Migrants and what not, so how can we believe what they have to say in other surveys?

Has Hasina started eating children for breakfast in one year?

Political ratings change quickly not living condition. This is well known fact that suffering of indian people is more then that of bangladesh. Apart from some western states living condition of other states is not satisfactory.

ALL IT REALLY MATTERS IS THAT SOUTH ASIANS ARE THE MOST SUFFERING PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD!!
