According to a report presented in the Punjab Assembly on Friday, nearly $1.22 billion have been spent on the construction of the Orange Line project so far.

The mega train project, which is expected to be completed by July of this year, claimed fourteen lives during its construction, the report said. The deceased workers' families have been paid more than Rs2,178,000 each.

An area of 1,065 kanal has been acquired for the construction of the project, the report added.

The Orange Line project was launched during former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif’s tenure and was expected to run on electricity and transport up to 250,000 passengers a day. Its capacity is expected to be increased to 500,000 passengers by 2025.

Launched in May 2014 in collaboration with a Chinese company, the Orange Line project is the country’s first metro line, with the construction for the project beginning in 2015.

However, the project has seen numerous delays including a legal battle in the Lahore High Court which ordered a stay on several sites as the development was trampling over heritage sites in Lahore.

$1.2 billion dam pay he kharch kar daytay people can live without this train but they can't live without water I think it should become criminal for the government to spend such large sums on non-essential projects when the country is desperate for dams.

This project, Lahore and Islamabad bus project, same in Peshawar and Karachi. Could probably have saved at least $5 billion and not have to be for loans to build dams.

Both are to blame, because PTI started a similar project in KPK. We need to keep them all accountable and answerable as to why money is being wasted when there are significantly more important projects in need of funding don't let political bias influence your judgement.

Bro of course PML-N were wrong, the loan money could have been better spent on projects that the nation desperately needs! But I then can't not object to PPP or PTI doing similar madness. They all need to understand that if the country goes down, so do they. What will they rule over

Just because we need dam doesn’t mean we don’t need metro projects. They are embodiment of the city and improve the transportation standard and affordable price for the people.

Even Imran Khan realizes the potential of metro project hence the project in KPK. The problem is the government that is not doing anything to finish the project. Under PMLN, the project would have been completed by now. PTI has nortortious reputation of not finishing the project at all. Even BRT project remains unconvinced.

We have the government who provides empty rhetoric but no experience on management. He is clueless who was suited as cricketer doesn’t mean he will be suited to be chairman of PCB never mind Pakistan as nation to govern.

The reason he is PM because the deal didn’t go right between PMLN and Pakistan establishment. I bet Pakistan establishments are regretting big time for leaving Pakistan as nation in charge to incompetent and clueless leader with no management skills at all.

ISLAMABAD: Terming the Orange Line train project 'a gift for the people of Lahore' Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar on Wednesday ordered contractors to finish work on the project by set dates.

Praising the multi-billion rupees project, CJP Nisar said he would love to travel in the train after its inauguration.

CJP Nisar made this remarks during a hearing of the case pertaining to the project, which was heard by a three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by him.

He warned that the non completion of the project on the announced dates will be considered as a contempt of the court.

Meanwhile, Naeem Bukhari, the counsel of a contractor, informed the court that they are not being paid for the construction work, to this Chief Justice Nisar remarked that Lahore Development Authority (LDA) should deposit cheques with the apex court and the contractors could receive those cheques after providing bank guarantee.

Bukhari also informed the court that a Chinese company would first finish interface work and then the local contractors would start working on the project. The hearing of the case later adjourned until January 16.

Later, rejecting the rumours that the PTI government has plan to scrap the project, Aleem Khan, the Provincial Minister for local government assured that Orange Line project will be completed by July, 2019

Metro is a luxury we cannot afford our country is at the brink of bankruptcy, it is akin to a beggar taking loans to buy a Ferrari we need dams and i used the word need because it is not a 'want' anymore it is required for our survival.
