1,05,000 Bangladeshi peacekeepers take part in UN Peace Missions, FM tells JS

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS)

SANGSAD BHABAN, June 27 (BSS) - A total of 1,05,000 Bangladeshi peacekeepers comprising of different forces have participated in the UN sponsored peace keeping missions in various war-ravaged countries so far to establish peace there.

Foreign Minister (FM) Dr Dipu Moni informed this in the Jatiya Sangsad today while replying to a scripted question from treasury bench member Sukumar Ranjan Ghosh.

Citing recent statistics till April this year, the foreign minister told the House that a total of 9,949 Bangladeshi peacekeepers comprising of 7,855 from Bangladesh armed forces and 2,094 from police have been working in 10 peacekeeping missions at present.

The number is the highest one in terms of single country peacekeepers working in UN Peace Missions, she added.

Dr Dipu Moni said, of the total peacekeepers, 27 are working in Minurso in West Sahara, 483 in Minustah in Haiti, 2,945 in Democratic Republic of Congo, 1,107 in Sudan, 324 in UNIFIL mission in Lebanon, 1,468 in UNMIL mission in Liberia, 903 in UNMISS mission in South Sudan, 146 in UNMIT mission in East Timor, 2,544 in UNOCI in Ivory Coast and two in UNSMIS in Syria.

BD is doing the right thing by contributing to UN Peace Keeping missions.

Helps everybody including the soldiers who remit more $ home.

I think this is a good choice. Most countries that don't have their own conflicts (a large part of European Union) need to keep their soldiers fighting fit. The best option then is the UNPKF where the soldiers are able to experience real life combat and at the same time able to earn a better pay.

I am interested to know one thing though:

- The Southeast Asian contribution as a whole from ASEAN nations
- The Chinese contribution from PLA
- The Arab/Islamic countries (other than Bangladesh and Pakistan) contribution.

Peacekeeping missions are a good source of income for bd military professionals. This is equivalent to billion dollar military aid to Pakistan and Egypt, a potential source for interference in independent government decisions.

On a side note, if I'm not wrong Bangladesh, Pakistan, India
are the top three contributors of peace keepers. The numbers
are quite similar with Bangladesh being the highest right now.
