"Bharati" is not at all derogatory. We are know as "Bharathi","Bharathiyan","Bharathiyar"... Its all depend on which region u belong. In south its commonly used "Bharathiyan"or"Bharathiyar" instead of "Bharathi". But the new generation prefer to be know as "Indians" rather than "Bharathi".
