How much of Pakistan do the Taliban actually control

No Agnostic there's no conspiracy theory. Pakistan's handling of this problem is almost completely devoid of any manner of planning or grand strategy.

    Ajmal Kasab's Indian trial

Fantastic. Nice open media trial for Kasab to make all manner of accusations, and for Indian officials to bumble and bluster along while utterly embarassing themselves in front of the world. Sometimes one feels that a nice quick execution via firing squad is needed for such people. This man...

    Why Pakistan is in trouble?

Have you guys considered that perhaps its the Baloch Nationalists that are keeping the Taliban out of Balochistan? I think that is indeed the case. Considering that Pakistan is actively pursuing Baloch sardars as high value targets and doing nothing to counter the Taliban, how long will it...

Allied Militants Threaten Pakistan’s Populous Heart

S2, of course my assumption is that the PA will leave their barracks when push comes to shove. I think the PA will not hesitate to fight for its own survival. But if PA cannot find a way motivate its troops - then we are in big trouble. Will the peasants resist the Taliban? Perhaps in...

Allied Militants Threaten Pakistan’s Populous Heart

Well, if the Taliban can rebrand themselves as primarily a class struggle then it does hold some possibilities. But such movements take a long time to develop, and currently there's very little grassroots support for the Taliban in the Punjab. In NWFP/FATA small numbers of guerillas could...

Allied Militants Threaten Pakistan’s Populous Heart

Eyeless I do take your point, but my post was about sympathies and not fanaticism. Of course, the moderate Pakistanis are not fanatics, hence the name 'moderates', but if push comes to shove, will they take on the Taliban? I think it will be far more difficult for them to kill Taliban than...

    Once again, MQM shows Courage

Bezerk your logic is rather strange. A local party is supposed to handle local issues, and it is. Yet, you're branding them traitors for doing exactly what they ought to be doing. Maybe MQM would be true patriots if they supported Taliban in the interest of the unity of Pakistan.

Allied Militants Threaten Pakistan’s Populous Heart

The terrain in not suited to Guerilla warfare. You need to hold ground in these vast, populous plains. IMO, it will be much more difficult for Taliban to overthrow the state in Punjab province.

Allied Militants Threaten Pakistan’s Populous Heart

Tell me Eyeless, if it were Hindu or Sikh armies marching towards Islamabad, would these moderate Pakistanis have the same brotherly attitude? I know my post is rather stark, but given the context its quite accurate.

    Maulana Abduz Aziz released

BBC Radio is generally very, very objective, even in tone. However, last night the newsreader said something on these lines "Pakistan has just received $5 billion in aid in order to fight terrorism, and shockingly, an extremist cleric was released from prison, who immediately went back to the...

Allied Militants Threaten Pakistan’s Populous Heart

^TS, the license to kill fellow muslims seems to increase with puritanism. If you're a moderate muslim, you can't kill anyone except non-muslims. If you're extremist musilm, you can kill every other sect of Islam as well. That's how it appears to work at the moment.

How much of Pakistan do the Taliban actually control

A lot of the areas which are marked as "under Taliban control" are not officially recognized as such by the GoP. If you consider full-fledged Sharia as Taliban control then yes only a couple of districts. But, if you consider the areas where the government writ effectlively no longer...

March of the Taliban By Kamran Shafi

Storm Lord, great post, really. It was a pleasure to read, and that's a rare thing to find among pages of half-baked opinions. All-Green, I don't think the answer is to control the media. It seems to me that there is a lot of hostility between the government and the media in Pakistan. Of...
