PETALING JAYA: Restaurants around the country are showing their support for Huawei, which is facing trade restrictions imposed by the United States, by offering users of its phones a discount on meals.

Korean BBQ shop owner John Albert Yee, 57, is giving a 20% discount to Huawei handphone users who dine in at his newly opened outlet in Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang.

He even advertised the promotion in a local Chinese daily.

“By showing their Huawei handphones, patrons will enjoy a 20% discount for our buffet dinner priced at RM39.90 at my shop, Han Shi BBQ.

“The promotion is to show my support towards Huawei, which is caught in the on-going trade war.

“The US government’s ban on Huawei is unfair,” he said.

Yee said the idea of giving a discount to his patrons came to him after a visit to China.

“When I went to China recently, I noticed a famous shop which offers a 10% discount to Huawei gadget users.

“I was drawn to the idea and decided to apply it here,” he said, adding that the promotion would last until September.

Engineer Wilson Loh, 37, said he would patronise the shop to enjoy the discount.

“I’ll definitely ask all my friends to pay the shop a visit as most of us are using Huawei handphones,” he said.

Friends Noodles in Cheras is offering an 8% discount on noodles and rice dishes to users of Huawei and Honor phones, the sub-brand under the company.

However, the offer is only applicable on weekends.

The Chinese electronics giant also appears to have a strong following in Johor Baru, with many stores offering similar discounts.

Bak Sang Bah Kut Teh is offering 50% off its Bah Kut Teh meals, while Huawei staff in uniform will also get a free cooling tea.

However, today is the last day of the promotion.

The 22 Korea Fried Chicken Factory is giving a 20% discount on all items to Huawei users, while Huawei staff in uniform will get a Korean fried rice with chicken chop set meal for just RM5.

The offer runs until June 25.

The Secret Cafe posted on Facebook that its owner, whose entire family uses Huawei devices, is offering complimentary snacks for each main dish ordered by a customer with a Huawei or Honor phone.Jugos juice bar, which has several branches in Johor Baru, is offering flavoured fries for RM9.90 to all Huawei users. The fries also come with bottomless refills.

Meanwhile, in Ipoh, steak restaurant Volcano is offering a 10% discount on steak orders to customers with Huawei products and it’s not stopping at that – the restaurant also stated that it will stop serving beef sourced from the United States.

Malaysia stands by Huawei

TOKYO: Malaysia will continue using Huawei products “as much as possible”, bucking a global trend prompted by security concerns and a US ban on the Chinese firm, the Prime Minister said.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, speaking at a conference in Tokyo, acknowledged the security concerns but said they would not deter Malaysia.

“Yes, there may be some spying. But what is there to spy (on) exactly in Malaysia? We are an open book,” he said at the Future of Asia forum.

Dr Mahathir said Huawei had access to research “far bigger than the whole of Malaysia’s research equivalent”.

“So we try to make use of their technology as much as possible.

“Everybody knows, if any country wants to invade Malaysia, they can walk through and we will not resist because it’s a waste of time,” he added.

TOKYO: Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad says Malaysia is proposing a new currency based on gold, as this would be more stable than the current currency trading which is manipulative.

He said the precious metal could be used to evaluate import and export activities among the East Asian countries.

“We can make settlements using that (new) currency (using gold). That currency must relate to the local currency as to the exchange rate, and that is something that can be related to the performance of that country.

“That way we know how much we owe and how much we have to pay in the special currency of East Asia,” he said during a dialogue session at the 25th International Conference on The Future of Asia (Nikkei Conference) here today.

Mahathir arrived in Tokyo last night for a three-day working visit.

He said the new currency could also be extended to countries outside the East Asian region.

Currently, he said, the global market is tied to the US dollar, which gives room for the currency to be manipulated.

“Just because that one country is affected, there is infection to the other countries. Malaysia was very stable way back in 1997… but because of the problems that occurred in Thailand (during the Asian financial crisis), they said we must peg the Malaysian currency also.

“What happened? The currency traders sold the Malaysian currency down and the value of Malaysian currency depreciated.

“It is not even the money that they have. They never had any Malaysian currency but nevertheless they were able to sell huge quantities of Malaysian currency and when it is depressed, of course they can buy and sell it at a higher price when it comes up,” he added.

“Currency trading is not something that is healthy because it is not about the (economic) performance of countries but about manipulation.

“Anything that you have in oversupply, we will lose value. Anything that is short of supply will increase in value so they sell huge quantities of money they don’t have, and because the amount is so big, there is depression of the value.”

Mahathir said if countries are downgraded or upgraded, it should be by an uncommitted international forum, not a country.

Here, he hit out at the US for “labelling” other countries.

“The US is fond of labelling that country as no good, this country as no good, and telling countries about ways to conduct their businesses.

“You are not democratic. That is not for any single power to decide. If you want to live in a united world, a stable world, we must resort to sustainability through agreement between all nations that have a stake in that problem.”

Asked if the Japanese yen or Chinese yuan could be used as the common currency in Asia, Mahathir replied: “If we try to promote our own currency, there will be conflict.

“But if we have a common currency for East Asia, a common trading currency that is not used in each country but for the purpose of settlement trade only, then there will be stability.

“But trying to promote the yen or the yuan, that is not the way to go.”
