QUETTA: President Asif Ali Zardari has said the government is ready to hold talks with exiled Baloch leaders to convince them about sincerity of its efforts to solve Balochistan’s problems.

Speaking at a function held here on Thursday for distribution of cheques under the Benazir Income Support Programme, he said that angry Baloch people did not trust government’s promises because of atrocities committed by pervious rulers.

The president said the government would remove the distrust by resolving longstanding issues and solving problems to bring Balochistan at par with other provinces and developed areas.

“We will initiate dialogue with exiled Baloch leaders after removing their distrust of the government.”

President Zardari urged the Baloch people who had taken up arms to stop fighting during the democratic era and come to the negotiating table which was the only way to resolve issues.

“All your demands are acceptable to us and efforts are under way to resolve all issues,” he said, adding that the Aghaz Huqooq-i-Balochistan package had been endorsed by parliament.

He called for patience and said that efforts being made by the government would take time to bear fruit.

The president said the government would launch more development projects, build dams and introduce modern technology to irrigate millions of acres of barren land in Balochistan.

State land will be allotted to women in the province in line with late Benazir Bhutto’s policy.

President Zardari said the PPP did not believe in the politics of revenge. He said Justice (retd) Nasim Hasan Shah was living freely in Punjab although the PPP believed he was responsible for the political and judicial murder of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

While following a policy of reconciliation, he said, he had sought Baloch people’s forgiveness for wrongs committed by others. “We will try to compensate the Baloch people for the excesses.” He also said the government would continue to pursue its policy of reconciliation despite all difficulties.

He said the people of Balochistan were as dear to him as those of Garhi Khuda Bux and he was trying to fulfil the promises made by the government.

He said the impact of global economic recession on Pakistan had caused a delay in fulfilling the promises.

However, the Centre is providing maximum resources to Balochistan despite financial problems, he said, adding that unlike in other provinces the development budget in Balochistan had not been reduced.

^These propos appear to be

1- directed towards the physical characteristics of a height-challenged person,

2- racialist or at least the use of what is called at home the anti-Punjab card,

3- undiplomatic i.e. exaggerated, giving the impression that the person alluded to is roaming the streets like a gangster and getting applauses from every quarter (withing the region) for the decision he helped pass.

Very uncalled for.

As his party has hinted at numerous times, the president appears to be running a 'retaliocracy' (siaasat e intiqaam).

Talks are the way forward in resolving the Baloch struggle in the midst of turmoil. We cant ignore the Baloch, a province that is nearly 50pc of Pakistan and is one of the most rich resource area in the country. These exiles should be allowed to come back into the scene so that their struggle does not become an armed one.

its gud to say such things. say it as many times as you can. but remember all this will be of no use if no socio economic development takes place. all the promises made in aghaz-e-balochistan must be fulfilled or else forget about balochistan. remember such promises have been made before as well.

I am sure there are other peace loving Balouchi that deserve to lead the province of Pakistan why bring f_ilth back from exile -

Balouchis there are numerous peace loving Balouchs in Pakistan is there a shortage of leadership ? I don't understand

.
There is a shortage of traditional leadership. You can't pop out Sardars. It is entirely difficult to give the rein of the province to anybody else then the sardars immediately. The change of leadership must happen but cannot be so quick. The estranged ones have to be pleased for a quick and friendly solution.

Yes of course developments will lead to prosperity and job creation and they are being pursued. But that does not solve the core issues, however with dialogue a lot can be pursued and it should be done to make Blochistan less unstable. In the past Blochistan has faced many crisis of which military operations, Akbar Bugti's murder and the rampant target killings of Bloch leaders. I rather see these "bad.. leaders" get into talks and resolve and make peace then let them plot behind Pakistan.
