Zardari calls for immediate arrest of Nawaz, his family
Former president Asif Ali Zardari has demanded immediate arrest of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family members.
“While the PPP leaders were released from detention after 2.5 years, Sharifs get bail in a day,” he said in a statement, in an apparent reference to Asim Hussain and Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar.
Dr Asim, who was charged for corruption and terror financing in 2015, left the country earlier this year.
On the contrary, Captain Safdar, who has been indicted in a corruption case by an accountability court, was arrested on his arrival from London last week. He was released on bail within hours.
Terming the accountability of Nawaz and his family a farce, the PPP co-chairman said the former were being held ‘accountable’ with a VIP protocol.
Earlier in the day, an accountability court indicted Nawaz in the Flagship Investment Ltd reference filed against him by the National Accountability Bureau. The judge read out the charges against Nawaz to his legal representative, Zafir Khan, who pleaded ‘not guilty’.
PPP leaders, Zardari added, had been imprisoned first and then cases were lodged against them. Lamenting that his party’s leaders had been “subjected to trials in multiple courts”, Zardari hoped the same should happen to the Sharifs.
The PML-N chief was disqualified in a landmark verdict of the Supreme Court on July 28 following investigation into the Panama Papers.
