Zakaria: Is India’s honeymoon with Narendra Modi coming to an end?

Modi is here to stay. His actions will speak for himself in the coming days. Inflation is already down and growth is picking up. Big bang reforms will follow soon. Bringing back black money stashed abroad will be a game changer

. .
I really don't understand how people expect Modi to pass controversial, 'big bang' reforms when every single bill will be stalled in the upper house by the opposition. In a year or so, once BJP has simple majority in the Rajya Sabha, we'll see big labour reforms, etc.

.
Where Modi has underperformed, surprisingly, has been in his core competence — economics. He has been slow to announce major reforms. His first budget was disappointing, and many of his Cabinet appointments have been lackluster. Those expecting major changes in subsidies, trade policy or labor market restrictions have been disappointed.

Yes ! Indeed ! India is not Gujarat and vice versa. If PM Modi doesn't act swiftly, his love story with the electorate may soon be over. Cutting out red tape to the bone should be his primary concern.

I think he has done well in reducing the red tape issue, His way of working is different from others, he likes to empower the bureaucrats and review their performance.....and his decision to track the interministerial issues is also commendable.... otherwise normally projects becomes football between ministries....

The recent poll results shows the power of democracy. People of India is not blindly following the name but they are choosing the people they see fit for purpose. For PM, they chose Modi as he is clearly the leader India needs for growth and progress however, for regional development, they chose the candidate they thought would be better suited for. Excellent work Indian democracy !!

Really? Akhilesh Yadav? Popular choice is not always right choice. But in a democracy we all have to live with it.

Everyone gives credit to modi on inflation..... But does anyone consider the current state of crude oil prices???

Crude oil prices was the lowest in 2008. Still the inlfation was above 8. So it is not just oil prices that affect inflation

.
money needs money. what modiji is doing is gathering that second money in the previous sentence.

tell zakaria to sell his sh!t in washington. here a gujrati is running the economy.

and what was the global economic situation in 2008?

Admit there was a crisis. However it didnt affect some countries like China. It did affect India though, mostly a by self inflicted wound

That is why attributed (not entirely) the lower inflation to crude oil price......

The point that is being made (& one I agree with) is that the initial period is the best time to push in serious reforms. The opposition would still be licking their wounds, the people more willing to allow the new person some leeway.....etc. Gets more difficult in the later years & the results won't show up for another 3-4 years, which is time that the government does not have. I wish Modi had moved more quickly on subsidies, the best example of something that could have been easily done is LPG subsidy. Should have increased the price by Rs150-200 per cylinder atleast & put the blame on the UPA. People absorbed rail hikes, they would have this too. Not like people buy cylinders of LPG every other day. Reducing number of cylinders at subsidized prices would have also benefited the finances. There is a heck a lot of diversion for commercial use, the same issue is true of kerosene which should have got a 4-5 Rs hike. It will become more difficult as the freshness of Modi's victory disappears. That is the argument that is being made,.

This analysis will be true for most leaders but not for Modi. The fact is that Modi has been vilified and demonized for the last 12 years by Media and Center. Many people (MSM, opposition) are looking out for one mistake from him that they can drum up to prove that they were Right i.e. Modi is a Monster. The first priority for Modi is to establish himself as a Prime Minister of India. This means everyone accepts him as their PM and not just those who voted for him. And he is doing it well. I thought this article from Jaggi was well put. Not sure if you read FP but incase not check out.

Narendra Modi's first 100 days weren't bolder: But next 100 could be different - Firstpost

Overall I think he is playing it well. Watch out for the next 1-2 years. He is very shrewd. I think he knows whats right when.

Would you consider the same, if inflation goes up due to rise of crude oil price? Crude pricing is adjusted by govt keping many factors in mind.. Lots of times the benefits are not passed to conumers even if crude prices go down.
