Zaha Hadid Architects has revealed images of the new Xi’an International Football Centre, to be ready by 2023, in time for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup. The facility will include a stadium with a 60,000-seat capacity, along with civic, sports, and recreational spaces for the city.

Providing optimum conditions for football, the Xi’an International Football Center was also designed in a way to maximize its use by future generations after the 2023 tournament. Located in Xi’an's Fengdong New District, the center will welcome national and international matches as well as domestic league games, youth training academies, entertainment performances, and cultural events. Integrated within the business zone, the project takes on public spaces, recreation, and dining facilities positioned on a series of shaded south-facing garden terraces.

Minimum load and material footprint are achieved through the use of an ultra-lightweight long span cable-net roof structure. To face Xi’an’s hot continental summer climate, a “wide perimeter roof overhangs shelter facilities within the building's envelope while the large, shaded, open-air terraces and public concourses incorporate extensive planting on all levels”. In addition, a translucent membrane over the seating protects spectators from extreme weather conditions and direct sunlight, while allowing an abundance of natural light in the project.

Regarding the facades, the open envelope invites the city into the heart of the building, and its “sweeping lines protect the stadium from northerly winds and convey the fluid forms of the roof that shelters the saddle-shaped seating bowl which maximizes the spectator seating provided at midfield”. In fact, the geometry of the seating bowl was generated digitally, in order to optimize proximity and views to the field of play.

An ultra-modern structure that is very distinctly recognisable as Chinese. Beautiful. I do like a lot of Zaha Hadid designs as they seem to blend modernity with history so well.

.
I miss Xi'an. It transformed infront of me. I wish CPEC also transforms Pakistan like that.

.
I m more interested in visiting this one once it's finished, it's going to be the world biggest.

As coronavirus lockdown restrictions in China are slowly lifted, one Chinese soccer club aims to quickly get back into the swing of things.

Guangzhou Evergrande has announced that work has begun on an eye-catching, 100,000-seat stadium, which would be the largest football stadium in the world.

Designed in a lotus flower shape, the stadium is scheduled to cost $1.7 Billion (12 billion yuan) and to be completed by the end of 2022.

The goal is to achieve “a world-class new landmark comparable to the Sydney Opera House and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and an important symbol of Chinese football going to the world,” according to president of real estate conglomerate Evergrande, Xia Haijun.

Guangzhou Evergrande has played at the 60,000-seater Tianhe Stadium since 2011.

The 100,000 capacity would surpass the 99,354 capacity of Barcelona’s Camp Nou, currently the largest soccer-only stadium in the world.

The design of the stadium is the work from the Shanghai-based American designer Hasan Syed, following an initial concept from the Evergrande Group chairman Xu Jiayin.

The lotus flower design originates from Guangzhou’s status as the Flower City.

The stadium includes 16 VIP private rooms, 152 VIP private rooms, a FIFA area, an athletes area, a media area and a press room.

According to ESPN, Xia told reporters that Evergrande plans to construct between three and five more stadiums with capacities of 80,000 to 100,000 around China.

This is to create capacity in case the country ever hosts the World Cup.

Guangzhou Evergrande is one of the most successful teams in China and Asia.
