DOHA: Influential Muslim cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi has called on Sunni Muslims to join the rebels fighting the Syrian regime, as he lashed out at Shiite group Hezbollah for sending its men to fight the mostly-Sunni insurgents in Syria.

Qaradawi, a controversial figure in the West but who has millions of supporters, mostly from the Muslim Brotherhood, also hit out at Iran for backing the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

"Every Muslim trained to fight and capable of doing that (must) make himself available" to support the Syrian rebels, the cleric said at a rally in Doha late Friday.

"Iran is pushing forward arms and men (to back the Syrian regime), so why do we stand idle?" he said, branding Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which means the party of God in Arabic, as the "party of Satan".

Hezbollah, a close ally of Iran and the Syrian regime, is openly engaged in the fight against the rebels in Syria. It has also fought for years against Israel, arch rival of Iran and Syria.

"The leader of the party of the Satan comes to fight the Sunnis... Now we know what the Iranians want... They want continued massacres to kill Sunnis," Qaradawi said.

"How could 100 million Shiites (worldwide) defeat 1.7 billion (Sunnis)?" he exclaimed, "only because (Sunni) Muslims are weak".

The cleric blamed himself for previously backing Hezbollah and its leader Hassan Nasrallah who gained popularity after steadfastly leading his group in the fight against Israel in 2006.

"I defended the so-called Nasrallah and his party, the party of tyranny... in front of clerics in Saudi Arabia," which is wary of neighbouring Shiite Iran and its allies.

"It seems that the clerics of Saudi Arabia were more mature than me," Qaradawi said.

But the cleric insisted that his call to fight Hezbollah is "not against all Shiites".

Fighters of Hezbollah are engaged in fierce battles against the rebels to capture the Syrian town of Qusayr near the Lebanese borders.

The militant group has already lost dozens of its men in the battle for Qusayr.

Qaradawi hosts a popular show on Al-Jazeera satellite television and has backed the Arab Spring uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Syria.

I don't think majority of the FSA are driving truck loaded with bombs. They have become a regular paramilitary force unlike Assads shabiha and remnants of Hizbullat. We have seen what they do in Syrian Sunni Villages and Towns.

By the way Your from Safawistan. I heard Nooris nephew was killed fighting for Assad in Syria? Is that true because I don't see the news anymore on the internet.

A scholar whose views are more politically motivated than anything else.
The regime in Syria has to go.. but not the manipulated way it is being done.

What other way is possible to remove an entrenched dictator?

This mans Father killed 40,000+ Sunni Muslims in Hamma, Syria in 1982 in only 40 days. His Shia and Allawite Militias went into Sunni Homes raped women and children and then took the Men and Boys out and cut their fingers leaving only 3 fingers in their hand. 1 for Salman, 1 for Ali, 1 for Muhammad. Then later they killed them with Machine guns.

There was no Pakistan Defense Forum or Youtube or Internet when these things were happening so no one said anything back then. Now that we have these things you claim this is politically motivated? If you haven't read about these cults and their history and the amount of Muslim blood they have in their hands then you should consider yourself politically motivated.

Where did I say FSA, I am talking about jahbat al nusra, they use suicide bombings.

Why does he not join, he could drive a truck loaded with bombs, age does not stop him from pushing a few buttons.

You don't bomb yourself unless you are desperate, you will bomb yourself among evil criminals who slaughtered, tortured displaced you and you family, you will do it to those who killed your dreams and destroyed your future. It's just low to criticism Syrians for bombing themselves in revenge, and ignore all the atrocities committed by Bashar forces. And please don't tell me FSA committed the same, because that's a reaction, the difference is that FSA fight terrorists whi Bashar forces fight his own people, mainly civilians. An eye is for an eye, no terrorists should be left in Syria nor Lebanon.

Thats why I said jahbat al nusra <- terrorist.

Suicide Bombing can't be justified in any case because this is clearly mentioned in Hadiths and Quran. There might be individual groups like Al-Nusra who have their own beliefs mixed in with extremism and those who have desperation. But I can understand when you say that. How can you tell a Sunni man who has just seen his wife or daughter raped by Assads Shabihah or seen his father or son killed not to engage in that. Out of these desperation and seeking of vengeance they can go to extreme like Suicide Bombing. But that doesn't negate the ruling that it is wrong in the first place.

Like Afghanistan with the US using them on USSR.

Syrians are nothing like Afghanies, you know them as much as I do. They're cultured and joyful people and won't adopt the culture of death, nevertheless, they are fierce and brave fighters. Who thought that those soft Syrians would ever fight like this. I didn't expect this from them to be honest with you. Anyway, any kind of Syria will not be worse than Assad Syria, definitely not.

Nusra has many foreign fighters, FSA does not want what al qaeda wants, we all know this, they may shout allahu akbar every second but they will not do what al qaeda wants, so they will have these terrorists problems who-ever wins.

Before the Taliban hoardes took over, Afghanistan was one of the fastest developing and well cultured country. Your degrading comments towards Afghanis are disgusting. It is not good to pass generalization.

Now lets solve the riddle of who has passed fatwas for breast feeding male co-workers and breast feeding female co-workers.
