Google has been allowed by a US court to continue showing the trailer of a controversial anti-Islamic film on YouTube, after editing some portions.

The internet search giant was granted the reprieve in the case over 'Innocence of Muslims', the film which has sparked protests by Muslims across the world.

In its ruling on Monday, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said that Google can retain the trailer of the film on its video-sharing websiteYouTube only after removing the performance of plaintiff Cindy Lee Garcia, according to a report by ComputerWorld.com.au. Any copy of the video featuring Garcia has to be edited to remove her part.

Despite the new ruling, the court has remained firm on its earlier order to not allow Google to upload new copies of the videos on the website.

Reuters adds:
Garcia had objected to the film after learning that it incorporated a clip she had made for a different movie, which had been partially dubbed and in which she appeared to be asking: "Is your Mohammed a child molester?"

The actress received death threats as a result of her appearance in the film.

The controversial video, billed as a film trailer, depicted Prophet Mohammed as a fool and a sexual deviant. It sparked a torrent of anti-American unrest among Muslims in Egypt, Libya and many other countries in 2012.

Google had refused to remove the film from YouTube despite pressure from the White House and others, though it blocked the trailer in Egypt, Libya and certain other countries.

The company had argued in the appeals court that Garcia appears in the film only for five seconds, and that while she might have legal claims against the director, she should not win a copyright lawsuit against Google
