Yemen minister calls for Gulf Arab military intervention| Reuters

DUBAI Mon Mar 23, 2015 2:04pm EDT

(Reuters) - Yemeni Foreign Minister Riyadh Yaseen called on Monday for Gulf Arab military intervention to halt advances by Houthi fighters, a move that could draw neighboring states into the country's deepening power struggle.

The Sunni Muslim monarchies of the Gulf back President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, whose forces have recently suffered reverses at the hands of Iranian-backed Houthis approaching his base in the southern port of Aden from the north.

"We are requesting an intervention by the Gulf Shield forces to stop this Iranian-backed Houthi expansion," Yaseen told the newspaper al-Sharq al-Awsat, referring to a military force of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

"We have expressed to the GCC, the United Nations as well as the international community that there should be a no-fly zone, and the use of military aircraft should be prevented at the airports controlled by the Houthis."

The Houthis, who share a Shi'ite Muslim ideology with Iran, seized the capital Sanaa in September, a blow to the state which widened splits in the army. The group initially shared power with Hadi but dissolved parliament last month.

Saudi Arabia and its Arab neighbors view their takeover as a coup and believe Iran is trying to build up its power in the region by backing armed proxies.

Speaking in Riyadh, Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal warned that Iran was trying "to sow sectarian strife" in the region and said Gulf Arab states would take steps to back Hadi.

"If this issue is not solved peacefully, we will take the necessary measures to protect the region from their aggression," he told a news conference.

CLASHES AND PROTESTS

Houthi fighters clashed with armed opponents in south and central Yemen on Monday, residents and the Houthis said. An array of tribesmen, militiamen and army units loyal to Hadi are resisting the southward advance of the Houthis, in skirmishes that have escalated since the weekend.

Houthi guerrillas backed by allied army units fought gun battles against tribesmen in Taiz province, residents said.

On its official Twitter account, the Houthis said their forces had repelled an attack by "terrorist partisans and mercenaries".

Militiamen and soldiers loyal to Hadi have built up a security belt on the approaches to Aden in recent days, placing tanks and artillery on mountaintops overlooking the frontlines with the Houthis.

Fighting also broke out between Houthi forces and tribal militiamen in the central provinces of al-Bayda and Mareb, killing at least 15 from both sides, local officials said.

The Houthi seizure on Sunday of Taiz city, Yemen's third largest, shocked opponents of the group there.

Hundreds of activists have set up a protest camp by a main army base loyal to Houthis in the city center, and soldiers there opened fire on demonstrators and injured several, activists said.

The Arabs are going to have to intervene directly, if they want to stop the Houthis. Right now, the Shia militia is far too powerful as it is getting a lot of weaponry from Iran. If the Arabs, in particular KSA, don't do something, Yemen will be Iran's completely.

Yemen is facing the same North vs South conflict since we saw during the heights of the cold war. What is happening in Iraq, Syria,Libya, Afghanistan, the same case is there in Yeman.

Syrian regime is not so much powerful to invade Jordan like the 70's. Iraqi baathists are not in power , so Kuwait will be not invaded. Yemen houthis are already facing stiff resistanc, two thirds of the old Yemeni army, face three main enemies: units loyal to Hadi in Aden, Sunni tribes in Marib province and tribes fighting alongside AQAP in al-Bayda province.

Oman is Sufi. Oman will not intervene. I think only Saudi Arabia could intervene because the other Sunni Gulf states do not border Yemen.

.
What did i say just a few days ago. King Salman is preparing for war and Huthis are going to face a level of force they haven't even imagined. A NFZ over Yemen with huge supply of weapons to the Hadi's loyalists will prove their blue print the Saudis developed for Syria. Iran doesn't have the ability to wage a war by itself in Yemen. In my opinion if GCC invades, the Huthis are all but dead..

GCCis unified group backed by Egypt,Turkey and Jordan. Iraq has been offered to come under GCC Military umbrella and today Iraqi PM has been invited by Saudi King.

Victories over IS "were realised with the cooperation of all the sons of the Iraqi people and by volunteers from the sons of the areas," Abadi told Salman, according to a statement released Sunday night.

Abadi also said that there is a strategy to hand over Sunni Arab-majority areas retaken from IS to the local police.

While there are Sunni tribesmen and volunteer fighters battling IS, most of the security forces and allied paramilitaries fighting the jihadists are from Iraq's Shiite majority.

Iraq is a Shia country. Iraq sends arms to Houthis to fight Sunnis. If there is a Sunni Gulf intervention, expect Saudi forces to comprise 99% and others to comprise a token 1%.

The only true enemy for Yemen is AQAP

Gov and Houthis should cooperate

Houthis are facing stiff resistance and there might be some agreement if the Iraqi PM will accept the Saudi king invitation and work out a deal.

Those are sunni tribes who are terms as AQAP. South sessionists wants to over turn the reunification of the 90 and we should not forget that oil reserves are there in South.

Iraq is a Shia country. Iraq and Saudi Arabia are rivals just as Iran and Turkey are rivals.

Both Saudi Arabia and Iraq are OPEC members.
