Xiaomi Corp has displaced Samsung as the top smartphone vendor in India, the world's fastest-growing major smartphone market, a new report said on Thursday.

Xiaomi achieved that performance within just three years. Lin Bin, president of Xiaomi, said if overseas markets maintain such strong momentum, the Beijing-based company will sell more smartphones in foreign countries than it does in China in 2020 or 2021.

According to the report by market research company Canalys, Xiaomi delivered nearly 8.2 million units in the fourth quarter of 2017 in India. Despite annual growth of 17 percent, Samsung failed to maintain its lead, shipping just over 7.3 million smartphones to take second place.

Ishan Dutt, an analyst at Canalys, said "Xiaomi's persistence has paid off."

"Its results are commendable, given that it entered the market just three years ago. Multiple factors have contributed to Xiaomi's growth, but the key reason for its success lies in the autonomy that it granted its Indian unit, letting it run the business locally. Localization in channel strategy, marketing and products has been evident in Xiaomi's Indian operations," Dutt added.

Together, the top two vendors now command more than 50 percent of the smartphone market in India, with market leader Xiaomi at 27 percent and second-placed Samsung at 25 percent.

Xiaomi's success in India will have far-reaching implications for its worldwide strategy, giving a big boost to its overseas ambitions. Having considerable business in the world's largest two smartphone markets will build confidence in its partners as well as future investors, Dutt said.

Chinese smartphone vendors are stepping up their push into foreign countries because the market in their home turf has reportedly stopped growing and even started receding in some cases.

"Growth in 2018 will be hard to come by. With the market continuing to shrink in China, smartphone vendors, including Xiaomi, must contend with slower growth for their smartphone business as they begin to expand in other countries," said Xiang Ligang, CEO of telecoms industry website Cctime.

Oppo Electronics Corp, the second-largest Chinese smartphone vendor in China, said on Thursday it will soon march into European countries and Japan.

What Vnese worthed for Cnese phone to put expensive spyware? Beside some nationalistic knife throwing on both side, normal Indians are more pragmatic than what you could imagine.

Huawei expects India revenues to double

By Danish Khan

Updated: Dec 06, 2017, 09.45 AM IST

NEW DELHI: Chinese telecom gear maker Huawei said its enterprise business has been growing faster than its services business in India and that it expects revenue in the country to double over the previous year as it focuses on sectors such as banking and finance, power, infrastructure and government.

“For the Enterprise Business Group, we are witnessing much higher growth in India compared to the global growth rate. The enterprise growth has been much faster than the carrier business,” Huawei India CEO Jay Chen told ET.

The growth is primarily being fuelled by verticals such as BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance), government (smart and safe city programmes) and over-the-top players as well as commercial market opportunities in India. The vendor has acquired more than 500 customers in the segment in five years since launching its enterprise business in India.

Globally, Huawei’s revenue from enterprise business grew 47.3% year-on-year to $5.9 billion in 2016 calender year.

“Irrespective of how other businesses perform, the enterprise business will definitely grow for sure,” said Chen.

The vendor has been strengthening its teams and increasing the manpower to fuel this growth. It is working with national distributors such as Reddington, and it has tied up with global system integrators for the Indian market.

“Moving forward, we are going ahead towards the commercial market, which is retailing,” Chen said.

The company is working with Tech Mahindra and Honeywell to tap into smart city opportunities, he said.

Chen said that the company is working on some smart and safe city projects in India, and it will be starting deployment soon. Huawei is also betting big on e-commerce as a lot of players are setting up huge data centres to drive business growth.

The chief executive said that Huawei is building a complete ecosystem of applications, technology and partners to tap into the enterprise segment in the country. Alongside, it is looking to build a robust industry ecosystem by investing in industry alliances, business alliances, open source communities and developer platforms.

How is OnePlus and Huawei doing in India?

One plus is doing really well, I guess it is at top in 25-35000 segment,
I donot think the informed buyers (having interest in technology) will go for a 30,000+ samsung

Huawei is nowhere, I see no promotions/ growth campaigns from their side, I feel they are not India focused unlike Xiaomi, moreover Xiaomi has a really good team in India

I think the key point is below.
" Multiple factors have contributed to Xiaomi's growth, but the key reason for its success lies in the autonomy that it granted its Indian unit, letting it run the business locally. Localization in channel strategy, marketing and products has been evident in Xiaomi's Indian operations," Dutt added. "
So Xiaomi has practiced China's famous hands off, no interference policy in India.
Xiaomi phones in India will be practically Indian if the Indian media don't start demonizing it.
I believe this has generated jobs with other than screw driver skills.
Both countries can cooperate in harmony along such lines.

A family member has one. Not bad. Decent performance and build quality. One weird glitch though. The screen rotation switch icon appearance is opposite of the others. Switch-on state looks like off. The rotation still works so has to be a software glitch.
