BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping told the head of the World Health Organization on Tuesday that the new coronavirus is a “devil” and that China is confident of winning the battle against it.

Xi added that he believes the WHO and international community will give a “calm, objective and rational” assessment of the virus, state television reported.

Chinese word 魔鬼 does not necessary mean "devil" as in supernatural or religion term. The word has many meanings. One of which is "Devil Training" in Chinese it is used to describe the extreme difficult training for special forces and commandos. Another is "Devil Teacher" refer to a teacher with extremely different teaching methods.

Most of the time Chinese word "devil" refer to extremity, so in this case it refers to a virus of extreme lethality.

Different cultural background has different interpretation of words is normal. Example "Add Oil" and "Eat Bitter".

Lol. Have you not been following the news. Even one death is one death more.

I don't think it's a full on medical emergency yet. China has done a great job in the virus's detection and containment. Very isolated cases have been detected, and China has been fully transparent on the issue. Meanwhile the extreme measures taken by China such as lockdown of city and cancellation of exams, are helping contain it.

It's not disaster, atleast yet.

This is higher than seasonal flu that typically has a mortality rate below 1%, lower than SARS which has a death rate of more than 10%.

However, the incubation period of this new corona-virus is also longer. 1-14 days. Its maximum incubation period is twice as long as SARS.
So I think epidemiologist Zeng Guang's evaluation of the virus is closer to reality than that of the president.
"The novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is more cunning than SARS."

If the government does not take some action to stop the spread, the outbreak could turn into a wider epidemic, threatening more lives all around the world. In order to prevent this from happening, the authorities have taken very active action. Even the president is involved. (he may have made false assessment though.

CFR of SARS should not be that high, most people contribute the high CFR due to the reaction time (the world did not know about SARS until 3 months after the virus outbreak) and the lack of procedure to treat CoV type pneumonia.
