Major Volcanic Eruption Could Make Japan ‘Extinct,’ Study Warns - Japan Real Time - WSJ

One major volcanic eruption could make Japan “extinct,” a study by experts at Kobe University warns, although the chances of that happening are relatively slim.

The study, by Prof. Yoshiyuki Tatsumi and Associate Prof. Keiko Suzuki, concludes that the chance of a big eruption that would disrupt the lives of everyone in Japan are about 1% over the next 100 years.

The researchers based their findings on the cycles and impacts of major eruptions in Japan on the study of the Aira Caldera near what is now the city of Kagoshima on southern Kyushu island. The caldera was created 28,000 years ago and has a diameter of 20 kilometers.

If a similar eruption were to take place in the area today, within about two hours the flow of molten rock, lava and ash would cover an area in which seven million now live. A large amount of ash would be carried across the country, shutting down transportation and other key systems, disrupting the lives of nearly 120 million people, or almost everyone in Japan.

“We should be aware,” the researchers warn in their report to be published in November. “It wouldn’t be a surprise if such gigantic eruption were to take place at any moment.”

The study pointed out that following the eruption of the Kikai Caldera over 7,000 years ago off what is now the southern tip of Kyushu, it took 1,000 years for human settlement in the area to recover.

The study also said approximately 7% of all volcanoes that have erupted over the past 10,000 years are located in Japan.

The professors warned that volcanic activity, especially in Kyushu, should be closely studied and monitored.

The eruption of Mount Ontake in central Japan in September killed 56 people and left seven still missing. It was the first fatal eruption in 14 years in Japan.

If this happens leaving the islands is the only choice. There are a few places that could accommodate Japanese immigrants in massive scale: Siberia of Russia, Australia, Canada, U.S., and western part of China such as Xin Jiang and Xi Zang (Tibet). To me 1% possibility is too big to be ignored for an event of this magnitude. I wonder if the Japanese government is working on any contingency plans? How would other countries cope with sudden influx of tens of millions of people from another culture? Think about it, Canada's population is around 36 million, Australia 23 million. Sure they have land, but would they be willing to allow immigrants that will match their own populations?

How many people can North America absorb? Their total population is less than 300 million and dominated by European culture. Are they willing to take in another 100 million people of East Asian culture? Hard to imagine.

West China is very sparsely populated mainly because of lack of water. But with the improvement in technology it can be overcome. For instance, by then maybe the technology of making fresh water from sea water is mature. I think that area can easily accommodate 20 million people, especially the Japanese people who are highly educated and diligent. Japanese culture is similar to Chinese, there won't be much conflict there. Political system, well, that's a different story. Who knows what's going to happen in 100 years? Most probably the political system in China will evolve into something that is reasonably open and fair.

Anyway, Japan is sitting on the "ring of fire". Disaster like this could happen. It's not too far fetched to think about the doomsday preparation.

As long as Japaneses are willing to be our 57th minority, transfer the sovereinty right of Japan to China now and since most of Japanese known Kanji so it's not a problem for them to learn Hanzi and convert to Han if they want..of course we will ask them to have Chinese name as how they did to immigrant...and all Japanese technology, patents should become and belong to China...then we can stroke a deal to save Japanese from future extinction but not wait until the moment of the desaster to accept the offer, the window of opportunity has it own time.

It seems delusional as conditions but If they want to save themself from future extinction and want to settle in Chinese land than they have to give us something in return...I think it's a fair deal...and they don't have to afraid of be assimilated since their brains are already filled with Chinese culture anyway.
