Energy produced from Hydroelectricity extremely important because of the current global climate change trend. Altough hydroelectricity is not a saint either, it's the lesser of the evils.
I'm pretty much sure Cold Fusion will be our future. This could be the topic of another thread but ultimately -and not in a distant future- mankind will produce it's energy from Cold Fusion Reactors. Especially TOKAMAK design is the most promising one, so we should all thank Soviet Union for that.
However renewable energy is extremely important for our transitional period. So I wanted to start a discussion about the current trends of renewable energy in Asia. This thread will be devoted to Dams but we can also discuss the other renewable sources.
Most up to data I were able to find was 2009 data where China is the largest Hydroelectric producer with an installed capacity of 196 GW. However that utilization is only 25% of it's actual potential. Nature was kind to China for hydroelectricity and China is using it.
Dams that has the capacity of more than 2000 MW is considered as Large Dams. Currently there are 64 operational Large Dams in the World and 20 Large Dams are under construction.
Of those 64 Large Dams :
20 China
8 Russia
8 Canada
6 US
6 Brazil (1 of them is jointly operated with Paraguay)
3 Iran
1 Pakistan
1 Argentina (jointly operated with Paraguay)
1 Tajikistan
1 Turkey
1 Vietnam
1 Romania (jointly operated with Serbia)
1 Venezuela
1 Egypt
1 Mozambique
Of those 20 Large Dams under Construction
8 China
3 Brazil
2 Pakistan
2 Myanmar
1 Russia
1 Ethiopia
1 Venezuela
1 India
1 Tajikistan
Of those Large Dams under construction, 2 of them that Pakistan constructs and 1 of them that Myanmar constructs are funded and built by Chinese companies. The large dam being built in Tajikistan is being funded and built by Russian companies. Meaning that 11 out of 20 under construction large dams are being built by Chinese companies which is an open domination of the industry.
The large dam being built in Ethiopia is called Grand Ethiopian Renaissance. It will be the largest Dam in Africa and will have a huge potential for Ethiopia. China actively supports the project monetarily, however does not take major roles in construction. As far as I could come up Italian and French companies are jointly building the dam. Egypt actively opposed this project because of the fears that the water flow of the River Nile will drop 1/3. The name is good, and I hope it will bring prosperity to Ethiopia.
