KOCHI: Scripting a new chapter in tapping the renewable energy sources and treading a new path in the green drive, the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is all set to become the first solar-powered airport in the world by commissioning a 12MWp solar power project set up on the airport premises.

CIAL airport director A C K Nair told ‘Express’ that the work on the first solar power station set up at a airport, aimed at achieving power neutrality, has almost been completed and it would be officially commissioned by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy next Tuesday.

The CIAL would now be able to cut carbondioxide emission from coal-powered power plants by 3 lakh metric tonnes over the next 25 years, which is almost equivalent to planting 30 lakh trees or not driving 750 million miles, said CIAL authorities, adding that 18 million units of power to be generated from the sun annually is also equivalent to feeding 10,000 homes every year.

With the commissioning of 12MWp solar power plant, CIAL would become the first airport in the world to be completely powered by solar energy as its entire power requirement of about 5,000 units per day would be met through solar energy generated from these plants.

The CIAL first started treading the green path in 2013 with the setting up of a 100 KW peak solar power plant on the roof of the arrival terminal by installing 400 solar panels, and this was subsequently upgraded to 1,000 KWp during the same year.

Buoyed by the success of this initiative, CIAL set up 12 MWp solar power plants with 46,150 solar panels over an area of 45 acres.

Old News but we are in right path....

CHENNAI, DEC. 19:

Airports in India are increasingly looking to solar power. After Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) announcing last week that it had set up a 2.14 MW solar power plant, Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has said it too has set up a 1 MW plant.

Though the plant at CIAL is up and running, it is yet to be formally inaugurated. And airports of Bangalore and Hyderabad are also keen on tapping solar energy, with Hyderabad closer to a decision for a 5 MW system.

Unlike Delhi airport’s solar plant, the 1 MW facility at Cochin is spread over three locations within the airport, part of it on rooftops.

None of them is on the ‘airside,’ or on the land abutting the runway, which is where most airports abroad have their solar power systems. A 320 kW plant has been put up on the vast roof of the MRO hangar of CIAL.

Another 550 kW is ground-mounted, and the rest is installed on the roof of the training centre building, the CIAL official said.

However, the official of CIAL said the airport has plans to expand solar capacity to 10 MW, and the future projects will come up on the airside.

Incidentally, CIAL had first put up a 100 kW system, which was built for them by Kolkata-based Vikram Solar. The 1 MW plant was put up by Emvee Photovoltaic of Bangalore.

Airports and hotels typically have large area of land and are a very attractive market-base for solar, says K.M. Santosh, Managing Director, Enerparc Energy Pvt Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of the German company of the same name, a global pioneer in putting up solar plants at airports. The solar plant in the Delhi airport was put up by Enerparc.

The solar plant in the Delhi airport was put up by Enerparc. Where there is possibility of the airport availing itself of depreciation benefits, solar is particularly attractive, he says.

Today, a 1 MW solar power plant costs between Rs 6 and 7 crore and typically generates 1.5 million units of electricity a year.

Very Good News

A lot of public utilities and organizations are taking up Green initiative and sustainability drive seriously and it is good to see such projects like Rainwater harvesting and solar energy been incorporated in large engineering projects. This not only reduces carbon foot print but also reduces the operational costs.
Kudos to the management of airport!

.
Pakistan should have also done it... Pakistani experts are tired of educating its politicians but Indians are catching the ideas and doing it. weldone.

.
I saw it from the air last month.. Hard to miss. Good initiative but bit of an eyesore.

World's cheapest solar power in Madhya Pradesh at Rs 5 per unit

Madhya Pradesh is set to be home to the cheapest solar power not only in India but the entire world, finally offering a cost-effective alternative to the environmentally-harmful thermal power.

Companies that have bid for projects floated by the Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company are ready to sell solar energy to the state for as less as Rs 5 per unit for a period of over 20 years. According to energy experts, the offer is lower than the global average price of Rs 6.10 per unit and even beats the cost at which the Delhi government buys from thermal power companies.

The price of solar power has seen a global decline in the last few years with India too witnessing a dramatic fall – fastest in the world – since 2010 when the Jawaharlal Nehru Solar Mission was launched. A unit of solar energy cost Rs 17 then.

The plummeting prices can be attributed to an increase in Chinese export of low-cost photovoltaic cells that has in turn led to an 80% drop in prices of solar panels over the last five years. Also, the efficiency of the panels to convert solar energy into electricity has improved from 13% to 18%, resulting in cheaper power.

India is a major investment destination for major international and domestic energy firms with Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing a five-fold increase in target for generating solar power to 100,000MW. All state governments revamped their solar energy policies to meet the new target and Madhya Pradesh was the first to announce the setting up of special solar energy parks with single-window clearance.

A senior official in the Madhya Pradesh renewable energy department termed it the beginning of a new trend which could witness the price of solar energy falling further at a time when thermal power continues to get costlier with an increase in prices of coal.

The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) too expects the price of solar energy to go down further when states like Rajasthan, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh invite bids for their projects.

A senior ministry official said Madhya Pradesh has given a boost to their estimate that solar power will cost less than thermal power across India by early 2016.

“What has happened in India in solar sphere in five years took 15 years in Germany,” Christian Redl of Agora Energywende, a German energy think tank, had told this correspondent during a visit to Germany in May this year.

According to Arunbha Ghosh, chief executive officer of the Delhi-based Centre for Energy Environment and Water, solar technology is seeing a major transformation across the world. “Solar is for energy what internet is for communication. In coming years, you will see solar energy run-equipment in homes like computers,” he said.

Some experts, however, fear that falling prices of solar energy may lead to its doom if corrective policy initiatives are not taken.
