The world's first electromagnetic ultra-high-speed propulsion ground testing facility "Electromagnetic Sled" has begun operation in Jinan City, east China's Shandong Province.

The facility has a maximum propulsion speed of 1,030 kilometers per hour for objects of a tonne or more, setting the world's highest speed record for high-mass ultra-high-speed electromagnetic propulsion technology.

It is a major project of strategic cooperation between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the governments of Shandong Province and Jinan City. During the design and construction of the electromagnetic facility, the research team from the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences made breakthroughs in a series of key core technologies, and many technical indicators have reached the world's leading level.

China tests the world’s fastest train​

The vehicle can reach 1,000 kilometers per hour, given its magnetic levitation system and the vacuum tubes through which it will circulate.

A vehicle that “would almost fly”. This is how they refer to the latest high-speed train that is being successfully tested by a group of scientists from the University of North China. They claim that it will be able to reach a speed of 1,000 kilometers per hour, 625 miles per hour, a quality that would make it the fastest train in the world. This is possible, since it uses technology similar to that of the Hyperloop, Elon Musk’s bullet train.

These, unlike traditional trains, do not work on tracks, they remain suspended in the air thanks to powerful magnets. The circuit, therefore, must be different: they move through tubes almost completely devoid of air. And it is thanks to these two mechanisms that the vehicle can pick up so much speed: thanks to the magnets, it avoids frictional resistance and, with the vacuum tubes, they eliminate air resistance.


The experts have already put their design to the test in a section of two kilometers, in which the train has managed to reach a speed of 130 kilometers per hour, a little more than 80 miles per hour. And, as the Chinese media have announced, they have already planned the next test: it will be a 60-kilometre-long circuit in which they hope to test the maximum potential of the train in terms of speed, the 1,000 kilometers hour.

This new project is part of the modernization that China wants to carry out of its high-speed train network. In the last ten years, Xi Jingping’s country has quadrupled it: going from 10,000 kilometers to 40,000.

Wait a minute...some Chinese members of PDF were laughing at a certain billionaire's idea for this as being absurd and impractical.

This is possible, since it uses technology similar to that of the Hyperloop, Elon Musk’s bullet train.

Of course the second China decides to implement something the previously considered "absurd" suddenly turns into "genius".

Can you imaged if you can reach Guangzhou to Beijing to a sign a contract in 15 min. then head to Shanghai sign another contract in another 15 min. :girl_wink:

China has scored another first in high-speed railway technology. After operating the world’s fastest commercial maglev train since 2003, China is now testing a much faster system that reportedly zooms at over 80% of the speed of sound.

Referred to as an “electromagnetic sled,” the train has a top speed of 1,030 kilometers (640 miles) per hour. That’s 2.4 times faster than the Shanghai Transrapid maglev train, which tops out at 431 kilometers per hour on a 30-kilometer elevated track to and from Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

The electromagnetic sled is being designed and built by the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in cooperation with Shangdong province’s Jinan City and provincial governments. The work is being done at a ground testing facility for high-mass, ultra-high-speed electromagnetic propulsion technology in Jinan City.

A China Global Television Network (CGTV) video shows a single car streaking down a straight track built on flat ground. Top speed can be attained with a total weight of a metric ton (1,000 kilograms) or more, according to reports.

In addition to high-speed ground transportation, tests of the system will likely contribute to China’s wider research into aerodynamics, materials science, aerospace and perhaps even railguns.

The electromagnetic sled can travel about 1.7 times faster than the maglev train developed by the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Tokai), although the Japanese version is a proper train. In 2014, then-prime minister Shinzo Abe took then-US ambassador Caroline Kennedy for a ride on an experimental model in Yamanashi Prefecture west of Tokyo.
