* Chinese FM says Beijing supports Pakistans sovereignty, economic interests
* President Zardari stresses on fast-track execution of Pak-China projects
ISLAMABAD: Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Tuesday called upon the international community to realise sacrifices rendered by Pakistan in the war on terror and the role it played against terrorists and for peace in the region.
Jiechi, who arrived in Islamabad on a two-day visit to hold talks with Pakistani civil and military leaderships on regional peace, security and bilateral ties, was addressing a joint press conference along with Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar.
The Chinese foreign minister said that Pakistan was playing a positive role for peace and stability in the region, adding that it also played an important role in fighting terrorists. The world should realise its role and the sacrifices it made in the war on terror.
In the backdrop of current international scenario, he said, China would support Pakistans in safeguarding its sovereignty, territorial integrity, honour and economic interest.
He also praised Pakistans policy of having friendly relations with all the neighbouring countries and beyond, saying China wishes Pakistan to have strong ties with the regional countries and others in the world. We also wish for its economic prosperity.
The Chinese minister met President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and army chief General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani before his meeting with Foreign Minister Khar.
Zardari, during his meeting with Jiechi, emphasised upon the need for fast-track implementation of Pak-China agreed projects in areas of energy, mining, infrastructure, IT, communication, agriculture and others for the mutual benefit of the two countries.
He also proposed establishment of trans-border economic zones for shared development and prosperity of Gilgit-Baltistan and western regions of China.
Briefing about Zardari-Jiechi meeting, spokesperson to the president Farhatullah Babar said that the president thanked the Chinese government and its leadership for their unswerving and continued support to Pakistans sovereignty, territorial integrity and multifaceted assistance at hours of need.
The president said that Pakistanis valued their brotherly relations with the Chinese people and were eager to learn from the Chinese experience of growth and development.
The president, while recalling his previous visits to China, said that each of his visit offered him a unique experience of learning.
He said that Pakistan was keen to translate its traditional equation with China into economic terms and that Islamabad attached great importance to enhancing economic and trade linkages with Beijing.
He said that the enhanced economic engagement of the two countries was an encouraging development and the two countries needed to fast-track implementation of mutually agreed projects for the mutual benefit of people. staff report/app
