Iran's seizure of a UK-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz has ramped up tensions in the Gulf region after the US military claimed it had downed an Iranian drone.

Britain and its Western allies have called for the release of the vessel, slamming Iran for its destabilizing actions.

US President Donald Trump said he would hold talks with Britain about the tanker's seizure by Iran's Revolutionary Guards.

"And this only goes to show what I'm saying about Iran: trouble. Nothing but trouble," he told reporters at the White House on Friday.

He again denounced the 2015 deal between Iran and Western powers aimed at curbing Tehran's nuclear ambitions, describing it as a "ridiculous agreement" made by his predecessor Barack Obama.

Trump pulled the United States out of the deal last year and began ratcheting up sanctions against Iran.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he had spoken to his Iranian counterpart Mohamad Javad Zarif "and expressed extreme disappointment that having assured me last Saturday Iran wanted to de-escalate situation they have behaved in the opposite way.

"This has to be about actions not words if we are to find a way through. British shipping must and will be protected," he tweeted.

On Saturday afternoon, he said that Britain's action against the Grace 1 supertanker was legal because it involved the enforcement of international sanctions against Syria since the crude oil on board was bound for that country.

In contrast, he said, Iran had no legal justification for taking control of the Stena Impero tanker while it was in Omani waters and forcing it to go to Iran.

Hunt said "due process" will continue in the Grace 1 case to determine what happens to the tanker and its cargo and called for Iran to also follow legal norms.

The incident came hours after a court in the British territory of Gibraltar extended the detention of the Grace 1.

"Our reaction will be considered but robust. We have been trying to find a way to resolve Grace 1 issue but WILL ensure the safety of our shipping," Hunt said on Twitter.

The EU said the seizure was "of deep concern.

"In an already tense situation, this development brings risks of further escalation and undermines ongoing work to find a way to resolve current tensions," said a statement from the EU's foreign affairs office.

"We urge the immediate release of the remaining ship and its crew, and call for restraint to avoid further tensions," it said. "Freedom of navigation must be respected at all times."

Germany called on Iran to immediately release the Swedish-owned, British-flagged Stena Impero.

The seizure was a "dangerous further aggravation of an already tense situation", a foreign ministry statement said.

France made a similar call, with the foreign ministry saying Iran's action "hampers a necessary de-escalation of tensions in the Gulf region.

"We call on Iranian authorities to quickly release the ship and its crew, and to respect freedom of navigation principles in the Gulf."

. . . .
I will say, dear Iran if u have the bomb, just blast it. Iraq also had the bomb, but they didn't displayed it, and hence Israel got a chance to do what they did. Better show the world what you got, and there is no harm in making the bomb for self defense. Believe me, you will never use it, but if you don't make it, someone else might use it against you.

. .
We should have nukes and then all of them will shout their mouths ....

Even GitHub start to restrict Iranian access to it ... there is nothing left to sanction .... So why we don't have nukes !?

Yup that's the point.
Just go for it. World can't do worse than what they already did.

‘Sanctions on Iran are also about Pakistan, Turkey & China’

IRANIAN scholar Dr Seyed Kazem Sajjadpour speaks at the event.—White Star
KARACHI: Eminent diplomats took part in a seminar titled ‘Changing regional dynamics in the wake of US sanctions on Iran; opportunities of cooperation between Pakistan, Iran and Turkey’ organised by the Centre for Peace, Security and Development Studies (CPSD) at a local hotel on Thursday evening.

Dr Seyed Kazem Sajjadpour, chairman of the Institute of Political and International Studies (IPIS) and former senior Iranian diplomat delivered a thought-provoking speech in the first session of the event. He said the subject required a conceptual framework to be understood, and it was rather simple. He divided the framework into three segments: A (analytical), B (basis) and C (cooperation).

Shedding light on the first, Mr Sajjadpour said from the past to today, the reality of the region [where Turkey, Pakistan and Iran exist] has changed. In the Cold War, we had a vertical regionalism [things were handled from the top, Seato, Cento, etc]. Now, horizontal regionalism has emerged where regions are becoming more open and can look back to perceive their situations. Turkey, Iran and Pakistan are important players, and there’s space for them. The three countries have great potential –– cultural, economic, diplomatic, etc –– and that potential needs to be used. As far as pressures on Iran go, it’s not just Iran, but Pakistan and Turkey too are under pressure. The pressures are there to weaken the three countries.

On the second aspect, basis, Mr Sajjadpour said there was a basis for a trilateral cooperation. There are excellent bilateral relations between Turkey and Iran, between Pakistan and Turkey and between Pakistan and Iran. Our bilateralism should be multidimensional.

Mr Sajjadpour said with regard to the third aspect, cooperation, it could be done in three phases. The first one is the think-tanking phase; second, invite think-tanks plus officials; and the third, foreign ministers and deputy ministers can be involved. Highlighting the challenges, he argued the major challenge was of a psychological nature. The US is trying to terrorise everyone; we shouldn’t be terrorised. Sanctions on Iran are not just about Iran, they’re also about Pakistan, Turkey and China. Another challenge is that of the mentality where we don’t take our region seriously. Also, connectivity should be there –– we don’t get together enough.

‘A new environment is emerging’
Suleyman Sensoy, chairman of the Turkish Asian Centre for Strategic Studies (TASAM) said the issue under discussion was the price that we are paying for what we didn’t do before. Our future will depend on what we do and don’t do [in future]. We have to read our geopolitical situation correctly. There’s a new environment emerging. Economic models have changed. We can solve our problems by coming up with institutional capacity. Pakistan, Turkey and Iran are important countries; together they have a population of 350 million people. We can [help] expand each other economically. We have great potential, and the tapping of that potential will be decided by our institutional framework.

Mr Sensoy said Iran agreed on nuclear development but the US did not honour the agreement. The friends in the Gulf should wake up and see their resources.

Answering a question after the first session about a possible attack on Iran by the US, Mr Sajjadpour said the concept of the attack was a vague one. If it’s done by a single action, Iran will respond immediately. If it’s an invasion, it’s not easy. “It’s a complicated issue. Iran is in a strong position.”

In the second session ambassador Ali Reza Bikdeli, senior representative of IPIS said the cooperation between Iran, Turkey and Pakistan was based on economies spread across an important geographical region. Their partnership has the capacity that can lead the three countries to a much better fate. “Sanctions are imposed for the purpose of limitation. But the experience of the Islamic Republic of Iran proves that the scope of sanctions cannot extend to the capacities of neighbourly relations.” Iran’s neighbours are diverse in terms of area, population, culture, economy etc. Pakistan and Turkey are two countries that can illustrate this diversity.

Ambassador Aydin Nurhan, senior representative of TASAM, said firstly things needed to be looked at through the historical process, such as the age of imperialism and colonialism. He told the audience that he was in Afghanistan for four years (2013-2017) where he saw American fatigue. Afghanistan is the last outpost of the Western imperialist age.

Najmuddin Sheikh, head of the Global and Regional Security Centre, Institute of Business Management, also spoke in the first session; and Ambassador Asif Ali Khan Durrani in the second.

Earlier, Ahsan Mukhtar Zubairi welcomed the guests and apprised them about aims and objectives of the CPSD.

With the changing regional and global dynamic's it would be viable and in the interest of the region that the Regional Cooperation Development (RCD) between Iran,Pakistan and Turkey which was dissolved in 1979,should be revived !

Absence of some one from important regional power India felt in the Seminar. Once there was a RCD a Cooperation Organisation between Iran,Pak, & Turkey, that can be revived if in interests.

Three countries should stand firm and cooperate. Pakistan should complete the gas pipeline. If US objects, ask them to provide a gas line at our border, we will connect to that. We need gas.

Great to see, that such discussions are happening in Pakistan continually. Geopolitics are an essential part of current chess game and we are terribly impacted. It is on us, on think tanks of our academia, govt, institutions - that we transform this threat to an opportunity!

On Saturday afternoon, he said that Britain's action against the Grace 1 supertanker was legal because it involved the enforcement of international sanctions against Syria since the crude oil on board was bound for that country.
There is a small problem . there is no UN sanction prevent anybody from selling Syria oil . and also the tanker can't use the port they claim it was moving toward.

.
@OldTwilight the real problem is your oil, not the bomb. They will never attack you, but after atomic bomb, they will hesitate to destablize you. Go for it.. Take Saudia onboard, and take Total control of strait of Hormuz. Blast Israel, and every thing will be fine.
Don't waste your energies and time, and don't let West to play with your beautiful country.

So its okay for UK to do the same thing but not for Iran.

Unless they slam the seizure of an Iranian tanker,

Who cares

The issue is bot this one ship. This can easily be solved diplomatically.

The issue is whether or not Iran intends to disrupt marine traffic in the Golf.

Some people here seems to have a short memory .But in the recent weeks , 6 ships " mysteriously " ran into trouble in the Golf. 2 Saudi , 2 Norwegian , one UAE and one Japaneses.

Only after that happened the British stopped the Iranian ship.

The issue isnt iran fighting back

The issue is a belligerent U.S.A who is unable to respect international agreements

Which then unilaterally places sanctions, tries to corner

Then expects iran to do nothing

The UK is even more daft, whilst being embroiled in a brexit divorce with the EU foolishly placing itself in the firing line by taking hostage a iranian oil tanker and even more foolishly expecting the Iranians not to respond
