Global military expenditure stands at over $1.6 trillion in annual expenditure at current prices for 2010 (or $1.56 trillion dollars at constant 2009 prices), and has been rising in recent years.

(1991 figures are unavailable. Chart uses 2009 constant prices for comparison.)

Summarizing some key details from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)’s recent trends summary:

World military expenditure in 2010 is estimated to have reached $1.62 trillion in current dollars;
This represents a 1.3 per cent increase in real terms since 2009 and a 50 per cent increase since 2001;
This corresponds to 2.6 per cent of world gross domestic product (GDP), or approximately $236 for each person in the world;
The USA with its massive spending budget, is the principal determinant of the current world trend, and its military expenditure now accounts for just under half of the world total, at 43% of the world total;

SIPRI has commented in the past on the increasing concentration of military expenditure, i.e. that a small number of countries spend the largest sums. This trend carries on into 2010 spending. For example,

The 15 countries with the highest spending account for over 82% of the total;
The USA is responsible for 43 per cent of the world total, distantly followed by the China (7.3% of world share), UK (3.7%), France (3.6%), and Russia (3.6%):

Military spending is concentrated in North America, Europe, and increasingly, Asia:

I've learned from this post that the military expenditure of america is nearly 6 times larger than that of china.

so maybe the usa is a bigger threat to world peace?

This is madness isn't it? Debt of $14 trillion economy in crises and still spending is increasing.... it seems like the 3rd world war is going to start soon....

in peace times that is till 1999, it was the lowest in the world, but it increased since than

it also tell, USA had planned afghanistan attack even before 9/11, which will explain the bush taking office, and increasing the budget so that they can attack afghanistan

Why is china's military expenditure so far low than US?

That would have a lot to do with the fact that USA has been actively involved in military engagements the world over. Military spending would include the cost borne during these campaigns which is huge. China on the other hand has not really had a military conflict for quite some time now.

Russia really needs to start boosting their economy.

And out of the top 5 largest defence budgets, China spends the least as a percentage of GDP.

We're number 2 overall, only because our economy is comparatively larger than UK/Russia/France.
