China remains world's largest trademark holder

China continues to top the world in the number of trademarks registered, driven in part by government encouragement to improve innovation and competitiveness.

The number of valid trademarks registered in China totaled 7.61 million by the end of June, data from the State Administration for Industry & Commerce (SAIC) showed on Tuesday.

The SAIC had received over 14 million trademark applications as of June. China has led the world in the number of trademark applications since 2002.

Zhang Mao, director of the SAIC, downplayed the surging number of trademarks, saying only a small proportion of Chinese brands are recognized in the international market

He pointed out that Chinese enterprises still rely too much upon cost advantage. Zhang added that only 20 percent of export-oriented firms have their own brands and just 11 percent of China's exports are sold under domestic brands.

As the "world's factory," China has been eager to improve its innovative abilities and export more products created in the country rather than simply bearing the "made in China" label.

The country's revised Trademark Law went into effect in May to streamline registration procedures and improve protection.

Zhang promised more efforts to safeguard intellectual property, including trademarks, especially well-known brands, which are more vulnerable to "malicious" trademark registration.

He also pledged to increase penalties for trademark infringement, such as demanding more punitive compensation.

Although I do not have data on it, I believe, the explosive growth in patent applications is also partly thanks to China's ongoing brain regain efforts.

China's international patent applications continue to grow in 2014: report
June 04, 2015

BEIJING, June 4 -- China's international patent applications grew to 25,500 cases in 2014, up 18.7 percent year on year, according to a report released by the country's intellectual property watchdog on Thursday.

The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), an international patent law treaty, is a major channel for Chinese applicants to seek international recognition.

High application fees are considered to be the top concern for most Chinese PCT applicants, while unfamiliarity with foreign laws and application procedure also hampered their patent internationalization efforts, according to the annual report released by the State Intellectual Property Office.

Chinese PCT applicants called for lower application cost, streamlined procedures and quicker access to patent approval, the report said.

Trademark is ok.

But we need more products made in China that mark the domestic trademark.

We need to create more international brands.

if its not mistaken, i remember Huawei was No.1 in 2012 too ?

Every mobile made in this world from any manufacture has to pay 1% royalty to Huawei and 0.8% to ZTZ due to the applied technologies developed by them.

And the world's 50% high tech products are made in China, that too to apply the technologies that developed in China.

This is extremely impressive, nothing beats solid research and development. Such feats will indeed consolidate China's technological prowess.

UN Agency Says China Tops World Again in Patent Applications
  • By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
GENEVA — Nov 23, 2016, 5:28 AM ET

The U.N.'s intellectual property agency says China continued to set the pace worldwide for patent applications last year, filing a record 1 million that nearly all focused on its giant home market.

The World Intellectual Property Organization says China made up over one in three of a total 2.9 million patent applications in 2015, followed by the United States and Japan with about a half-million each. Domestic-only applications made up about two-thirds of the global total; only about 42,000 Chinese applications were for patents outside China.

Releasing an annual report on Wednesday, WIPO officials say the increase shows the strong demand for protection for intellectual property rights.

The agency says the computer technology, electrical machinery and digital communications sectors recorded the highest number of published patent applications.

Patent filings since 1883

From 1883 to 1963, the USPTO was the leading office for world filings. Application numbers at the JPO and the USPTO were stable until the early 1970s, when the JPO began to see rapid growth, a pattern also observed for the USPTO from the 1980s onwards. Among the top 5 offices, the JPO surpassed the USPTO in 1968 and maintained the top position until 2005. Since early 2000s, the number of applications filed at the JPO has trended the number of applications filed at the JPO has trended downward. Both the EPO and KIPO have seen increases each year since the early 1980s, as has SIPO since 1995. SIPO surpassed the EPO and KIPO in 2005, the JPO in 2010 and the USPTO in 2011 – and it now receives the largest number of applications worldwide. There has been a gradual upward trend in the combined share of the top 5 offices in the world total – from 70.4% in 2000 to 82.5% in 2015.

In terms of percentage, China has made the largest leap, now nearly equating the US and Germany.

The per capita improvement becomes even more impressive given the domestic market size of China. In a sense, Japan and Korea are forced to have higher patents while China not that much. Nonetheless, growth in patent applications clearly shows the innovation direction of China's economy. I anticipate China to settle for the second spot by 2020, taking over Japan.

Yes China has ascended to number 6, a big jump from number 9 last year. For 2015 Edition see this link:

Now China (706 per million population) is only slightly behind US (897) and Germany (887), but still quite some distance behind Switzerland (1,018), let alone Japan (2,039) or SK (3,305). However I don't see China ascending to top three in this per capita count, after all China has a large population base.

China top innovator with one million patent requests in year: U.N.

China is driving Asian-led growth in innovation worldwide, becoming the first country to file 1 million patent applications in a single year, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) said on Wednesday.

Chinese innovators filed most of their 2015 applications in electrical engineering, which includes telecoms, followed by computer technology and semiconductors, and measurement instruments, including medical technology, the U.N. agency said.

"The figures for China are quite extraordinary. It is the first patent office in the world to receive more than 1 million applications," WIPO director-general Francis Gurry told a news briefing to launch its report, "World Intellectual Property Indicators".

But there is a "slow and gradual" increase in China's applications for international patents, Gurry said. "They are in process of making innovation a central point of their economic strategy."

"Once again we see an increasing dominance almost by Asia as the origin of filing activity for intellectual property. If you look at the figures, you see 62 percent of global filing activity for patents is located in Asia, 55 of global activity in trademarks is located in Asia and 68 percent of design applications are in Asia," he added.

Worldwide, some 2.9 million patent applications were filed last year, a 7.8 percent increase over 2014, WIPO said. Roughly two in three patents are ultimately approved, Gurry said.

The United States ranked second last year with 526,296 patent applications, followed by Japan at 454,285 and South Korea with 238,015.

Thanks for your compliment and modesty. India is doing fine, it's been among the top 20 origins of patent filings for many years (14th in the world on par with Italy, Canada; 4th in Asia). Trend is good, I expect to see India among world top 10 soon.

Good to India innnovates so nicely in sectors like IT Methods for Management, Computer, congrats!

We should aim for top 5, by 2025 if we want to become a developed country and take advantage of our demographic dividend. 14th is freakin pathetic for a country of 1.2 billion
