China's gas demand is not enough to cover the demand of the whole of Europe.
According to data from the Ministry of Commerce, the total increase in the last five years is estimated to be around 30 billion cubic meters at most. If China abandons LNG imports from Australia and the United States, it will increase its demand by an additional 60 billion cubic meters. Therefore, in the five years, China can provide Russia with a maximum of 90 billion cubic meters of demand, only about 65% of Russia's current supply to Europe.

But China itself is a big country of natural gas, and its own productionl reach 207.5 billion cubic meters in 2021. The import volume in the same year is less than 190 billion cubic meters

It is not about demand. It is about limits of existing pipeline, new pipeline takes 5yr+ to build.

Demands can be built up provided the gas is relatively cheap and secure.

Production of natural gas is expensive in China compared to Russia. Cheaper to import.
