willl india be inducted in nuke club......???

. . .
The nuclear member group itself is wrong. Why it is limited to only 5 countries having permanent membership in the UN(of which Britain, France and to a certain extent Russia has no importance in the current world scenario).

Even if India added in to this group it will only send a wrong message to other countries. You cannot assume that every country will be as responsible as India in the nuclear issue.

let us see what happens.....
any ways it must be a biggie if this is given so much importance....

PM hopes US will get India nuke power state status

Washington: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hopes that the United States will help India get the official status of a nuclear weapons state, given its impeccable record in the field of non-proliferation.

"Well, I hope it will happen," he told Fareed Zakaria of the CNN when asked if he thinks that the US should try to press the issue and have India brought into the system as a nuclear weapons state.

The interview was taken in New Delhi, before Singh travelled to Washington last week. Its first part was telecast last Sunday, while the second part was aired yesterday.

It would be a positive development, the Prime Minister said when Zakaria asked if it is "fair to say that one of the ultimate objectives of India would perhaps be to become a member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty system, but to be invited in as a nuclear weapons state in the way that China was." Despite its status as a nuclear nation, India has never signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Zakaria noted.

India's ultimate goal is actually to sign the treaty, but it does not have official nuclear state status. China got that in 1992, and that is what India wants, Zakaria said.

"Well, if we were to go that way, that would be a very positive development from our point of view," Singh said. "We are a nuclear weapons state, but we are a responsible nuclear power. We have an impeccable record of not having contributed to unauthorised proliferation of these weapons of mass destruction," he said.

"So, I think India does require, I think, greater consideration of the global community," Singh said. Last week, welcoming the Indian Prime Minister at the White House, US President Barack Obama had identified India as a nuclear power.

"As nuclear powers, we can be full partners in preventing the spread of the world's most deadly weapons, securing loose nuclear materials from terrorists, and pursuing our shared vision of a world without nuclear weapons," Obama had said.

The statement was viewed by many experts as a recognition by the US that India is a nuclear state.

"We should cooperate in addressing global challenges of combating terrorism, making our environment cleaner and moving towards a world free of nuclear weapons," the Prime Minister had said, adding that India supports the move of the Obama Administration to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons

because they are the power houses of the current world, their national power can not be matched by anyother country. let me explan a little bit, when i said national power it refers to Military power, Political power and Economic power, up untill now, no country could challenge them. take Japan for example: Military power. without foreign support she can hardly defend herself. maybe someone will argue that Japan does build ship,planes and tanks, but that is only an illusion.

for US
a plane = engine + radar + airframe + ...;
engine = component A + component B +component C...;
component A = company A1 + company A2 + company +...
radar = ...;
airframe = ...;
finally, a plane = tens of thousands of US company.

for Japan,
a plane = engine + radar + airframe + ...;
engine = imported;
radar = imported;
airframe = assembled in Japan;
finally, a plane = some Japanese companies + tens of thousands of foreign company

and the something goes to the other 2. Japan is rich, but not a Economic power house. she is overly depending on import, and Japan will starved if she stop trading. what about Political power? hadrly any. can she "say" something to others, politely but hinting, "stop doing xxx or i will xxx".

too early for now and too many hurdles to cross. I do not think we will be obliged.

guest, can you tell me that why your arguments are so sensible, from which channels you collect your info??? do you always mix with chinese forums and discuss with them??? i am very curious.....most of the people here are influenced only by the western media point of views so basically they are repeatedly saying what the western media says..they are mere copy machine of western propaganda actually without knowing more facts.........

Is there any advantage in becoming a member of this group.

yes...apart from being in synch with India long term ambition of being a global player here are the key articles of the pact and my thoughts on some of them...

Article I:[17] Each nuclear-weapons state (NWS) undertakes not to transfer, to any recipient, nuclear weapons, or other nuclear explosive devices, and not to assist any non-nuclear weapon state to manufacture or acquire such weapons or devices.

Article II: Each non-NWS party undertakes not to receive, from any source, nuclear weapons, or other nuclear explosive devices; not to manufacture or acquire such weapons or devices; and not to receive any assistance in their manufacture.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The above was the reason for infamous sanctions on India/Pak during their repective nuclear tests...

Article III: Each non-NWS party undertakes to conclude an agreement with the IAEA for the application of its safeguards to all nuclear material in all of the state's peaceful nuclear activities and to prevent diversion of such material to nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Basically all the restrictions are for non-nws members...Nothing for NWS members apart from the fact that they should not help non-nws members from making bombs...

Article IV: 1. Nothing in this Treaty shall be interpreted as affecting the inalienable right of all the Parties to the Treaty to develop research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without discrimination and in conformity with Articles I and II of this Treaty.

2. All the Parties to the Treaty undertake to facilitate, and have the right to participate in, the fullest possible exchange of equipment, materials and scientific and technological information for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Parties to the Treaty in a position to do so shall also co-operate in contributing alone or together with other States or international organizations to the further development of the applications of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, especially in the territories of non-nuclear-weapon States Party to the Treaty, with due consideration for the needs of the developing areas of the world.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This is where India-US nuclear pact helped passing on the similar benefits to India even though India is not a signatory of NPT

Article VI. The states undertake to pursue "negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament", and towards a "Treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control".

Article X. Establishes the right to withdraw from the Treaty giving 3 months' notice. It also establishes the duration of the Treaty (25 years before 1995 Extension Initiative).

If you look at the security council of UN you will find the similar discrimination...Anyways the answer to your question is that these five countries are the winners to World War II and that's why permanent members of security council..as far as NPT is concerned only these 5 officially announced them as Nuclear Powers before treaty come into picture...India did her first nuclear test in 1974 and later on succumbled under international pressure ..to formally join nuclear club only in 1998...However treaty don't recognize any country as permanent member who achieved nuclear status after 1967(to include china)....
