Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday said that reforming Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) is high on his agenda, but warned that if the tax collection authority cannot be fixed, he will create a new one.

"Reforming FBR is essential. Until that is done, we [the state] will not be able to meet our expenses," the prime minister said in an address to the 11th All-Pakistan Chambers President Conference in Islamabad.

"This is why we will try our best [to fix] FBR and I assure you [the business community] that I've been constantly having discussions and meetings with Abdul Razzaq Dawood and Asad Umar on how to generate revenue and make FBR a business-friendly institute.

"But I should also tell you this: if we realise that the FBR cannot be fixed, we will create a new FBR. This is because Pakistan's survival is linked to it. It's not about our liking or disliking: if our tax collection authority does not function properly, it could lead to a security risk. No nation that relies on loans can maintain its pride and independence," he said.

I was hoping for a stricter warning...Like if you dont stretch the tax net to 70% by end of the year we are REPLACING you ...along those lines!

Iam pretty much sure that the bureaucrats will have the final say in drafting any such reform bill.

Like they made it a law that provincial anti corruption departments are only supposed to be headed by a guy from Pakistan administrative services . So no one gets nab from the same service except some rankers and clerks - - - -

Replacing FBR with what? The same people under a new name? Where can the thousands of people in such an organization be replaced overnight? Or does this mean changing only the people at the top of FBR, like was done with SNGPL? How would that improve anything? How can the FBR extend the tax net by itself without the law backing it up?

New tax authority would be a waste of money if the same people are to run it. And if you are going to bring in new people - why create a new authority at all? Just bring them into FBR.

FBR need a lot more to change there is no way to tax refund. I've PKR 34,000 to FBR but they say you can adjust this amount in coming yearsssssss.
