One major reason is the concept of 华夷之辨, Hua–Yi distinction, ever since Zhou Dynasty, which applies to ordinary people, "if a Chinese goes to barbarian land, he becomes barbarian, if a barbarian comes to China, he becomes Chinese." Before 19th century, no Chinese were willing to settle in foreign lands. Even during Zheng He's voyage, they brought giraffe, elephants from Africa, but not slaves. Most wars during ancient China were fought around China to secure its boarders from barbarians.

Because some people claimed that China has 1.3 billion people now so we must compare China with the rest of the world even in ancient history, lol. But they forget that China only had 400 million people 60 years ago and only during Mao's era that encouraged people to have lots of babies, China's population surged.
