Now one could argue that Allama Iqbal was talking about the re Sanskritised Devangari Hindi and not Urdu..but I think one will have a hard time selling that...
Allama Iqbal was comparing Urdu(original Hindi) with Dari (Afghan Persian) and he preferred that latter. It is shame that Pakistan did not attempt to revive Persian after the British abolished it. Most of Iqbal's works are in Dari. Islam came to us mainly via the Persian language. It would have helped the Muslims of Pakistan to reconnect...but now we are losing even Hindi (Urdu).

I bet you that most Pakistanis in Pakistan less than 30 would have a hard time understanding wha the FM was talking about. They would probably be asking their parents or elders.

You are wrong. Quad-e-Azam said Pakistan's national language will be Urdu and he was right.

Also in case you have not noticed, Urdu is pretty much a dying language in the street. It only lives in Urdu and Literature departments. I am in Rawalpindi as I write this and when I go to the local shops, sometimes the shop keepers don't understand Urdu(Hindi) words.

Pakistan ought to enforce the use of the Language of Urdu the official language for courts and bureaucracy . And stop calling institutions Civil Aviation Authority or Election Commission...the way Pakistan is going Quaid e Azaam will be right for a relatively short period of time....

Sikhs are one of the most respected class in northern India. Representation of Sikhs in Indian Defence Forces is way above their proportionate polulation.

During Indira Gandhi regime army did operation inside Golden Temple but even your forces cleared Lal Masjid in 2007. Those were both security operations and were not done against any religion.

Pakistan has many pilgrimage sites for Sikhs and Hindus. Once the relation between the two nation improves then all these matters will get resolved automatically.

On a personal level, I recently thoroughly enjoyed an Iranian member telling some pan Islamist Pakistani members fawning over Iran and Turkey what the people's of the Middle East, be they Persians, Turks or Arabs, really see Pakistanis and Indians as.

I know where you are coming from my dear little "school boy" ...because you are applying the "Constantinople" analogy here which is wrong for plenty of reasons. Allama Iqbal was a great philosopher, scholar and a statesman, a dreamer but not a messenger or prophet whose words are divine. Furthermore, you have no idea about the evolution in his thoughts. So it depends when did he wrote it. Also it does not imply he is talking about Urdu..he may very well be referring to Hindi itself and both languages existed in parallel. Mirza Ghalib, Mir Taqi Mir, Momin, all were great Urdu poets.
