Because until 2016 most Western journalists thought that they could run China better than the Chinese government and people no longer seem to believe that.

The idea was that the US and Europe were models of government and that China should copy the West. Right now there is so much dissatisfaction with the government in the West that no one is interested in telling China what to do.

Also it doesn’t help that China isn’t imploding whereas the Middle East is. Remember how wonderful “Arab Spring” was supposed to be? The fact is that the West tried hard to create their own democratic government in Iraq and Afghanistan and it turn out to be a nightmare.

It’s also the case that increasingly large numbers of people were born after the Cold War and talking about China in terms of anti-Communism makes as much sense as talking about Austria in terms of the Habsburgs.

A lot of this changed when Trump was elected and the UK left the EU. It turns out that a pretty large fraction of journalists hate Trump (and that includes the Republican establishment as well as the Democratic ones) and also are highly pro-EU. So if someone complains about the lack of democracy in China all you have to do is to respond by saying “so we can elect someone like Donald Trump who doesn’t think global warming exists”.

Realistically I don’t think that Western journalists and academics really wanted “real democracy”. They wanted a system of government in which people voted but in the end the government was run by professionals that thought like journalists and academics.

Now that you start having politicians in power that are getting their power from people that hate journalists and academics democracy doesn’t look that good.

Here are some thoughts:

In spite of continued criticism of the Chinese government over human rights China is still there;

How many stories can you write criticizing China over human rights and still expect western readers to read them in spite of each story saying essentially the same thing over and over again except with different words?

In spite of books like Gordon Chang’s classic “The Coming Collapse of China” China is still there and shows no signs of collapsing. How many times can you say this over and over again and it does not happen and yet still retain credibility?

The Chinese government is increasingly media-savvy and is investing heavily in media creating media behemoths such as CGTV (China Global Television) etc.

Chinese are traveling more spending more buying overseas real estate more and more overseas schools colleges and universities are becoming dependent on income from Chinese students and they do not act like violent terrorists killing innocent people so what is there to fear about them?

At some point westerners begin to ask: “You have said that this Chinese government continues to violate human rights and yet the government is still there and Chinese travel overseas more and spend money and they are not violent so something you (the western media) have been telling us about China doesn’t add up.”

Western editors notice this change so they need to adjust their China coverage accordingly.

Moreover most western advertisers are involved with China in one way or another so using the same old stick to beat China no longer works.

It’s not. It is just becoming less anti-China as the influence of New Right politics declines.
China was resented and misrepresented because it was a success that refused to conform to New Right values.

The keyword is "increasingly", relative to before. It's not pro-China by any means. And once western media no longer has to expend its energy and political capital on bashing trump and Russia, etc, they will go straight back to bashing China. With the ongoing events in the world, we just got a lucky break, that's all, and it won't last.

Wrong. Western liberals, especially US liberals, are as neo-fascist as a right winger could be. Case in point, Obama and Hillary terrorism-enabling duo. It was under them that the US over-militarized the already militarized East Asia.

In fact, for China, a right winger at the Whiter House is way better than a left winger at the just White House.

I agree. In fact, the hate-filled spews keep coming. I did not realize any decrease. The only difference may be is that Russia media is playing by their games and striking punches to US neo-fascist MSM. Trump isn't helping, either.

Calm down. You should be thankful to western media that act as counter balance to governments. Even if some elected leaders go nuts after the election, they will face the press as biggest enemy. yes Unlike some certain countries controlled by a single party we know, the western media is not controlled by a political instance. You are educated in the west, aren't you? If yes, you should be aware of that fact.

Well said.

P.S.: Political warfare vs enemy states (used to be Soviet block, nowadays like China, Russia, Cuba, North Korea, some Muslim nations) has been going on for decades. Other than the so-called MSM in private sector, there is also media directly funded by US government aka anti-China propaganda institution. Check Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG, used to be US Information Agency which main role was propaganda warfare vs USSR), media funded and supervised include Voice of America, Radio Free Asia (RFA), Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty, Office of Cuba Broadcasting, Middle East Broadcasting Network.

They manufacture fake stories and supply to MSM. Recent example - "China banning Muslim names and beards ... according to an unnamed official" - produced on April 20, by RFA.

Because they got China wrong for so many time and for so long that they are now completely discredited.

Heard of Gordon Chang? This guy used to come up with exact timelines for China's imminent collapse. First it was 2011, then 2012 (I am not kidding). His last prediction was back in 2016 August. He claimed Chinese economy will unravel...wait for it...in six months.

US doesn't even need to fund state-owned propaganda channels. Privately owned corporate media like NYT, WashPo, Reuters, CNN, etc, already do all their dirty work for them.

.
the western media is not controlled by a political instance. You are educated in the west, aren't you? If yes, you should be aware of that fact.

The control of Western media is less subtle, but there is a control. Especially the dominant/MSM media is owned by corporates that act like shadow governments. They may took side with one elite group against the other, but, in the end, they will not side with the public. That's how, each time, they would be in the service of the system managers behind the curtain.

Oh thanks. I previously mistakenly thought the evil western media is controlled by bigot capitalistic Jewish pigs. Come on, you can admit wanting to step in Jews foot in controlling the world, if you can. You just wait for your moment.

It hasn't been pro or anti China. It's simple. As long as China respect the rule-based global order and believe in the same ideals as the western world - freedom (economic - capitalism, political - democracy and personal - human rights), it will not come in conflict with the west but as long as it goes against western values, it will be criticised. Rightfully so. China is not hated for what it is. The main problem is China replacing the current order with tyranny and law of the jungle with its economic might. Before someone points out problems with US. Obviously it isn't perfect but it has been better than all the powers in the past and managed to build a level playing field.
