Why is there no looting in Japan? – Telegraph Blogs

The landscape of parts of Japan looks like the aftermath of World War Two; no industrialised country since then has suffered such a death toll. The one tiny, tiny consolation is the extent to which it shows how humanity can rally round in times of adversity, with heroic British rescue teams joining colleagues from the US and elsewhere to fly out.

And solidarity seems especially strong in Japan itself. Perhaps even more impressive than Japan’s technological power is its social strength, with supermarkets cutting prices and vending machine owners giving out free drinks as people work together to survive. Most noticeably of all, there has been no looting, and I’m not the only one curious about this.

This is quite unusual among human cultures, and it’s unlikely it would be the case in Britain. During the 2007 floods in the West Country abandoned cars were broken into and free packs of bottled water were stolen. There was looting in Chile after the earthquake last year – so much so that troops were sent in; in New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina saw looting on a shocking scale.

Why do some cultures react to disaster by reverting to everyone for himself, but others – especially the Japanese – display altruism even in adversity?

britain is nothing like japan, britain time is over, people are becoming illeterate, education price too high, britain was once a great country but it will eventually o down the drain

japan in contrast is the worlds second best economy, has the most advanced technology, and thus people are too much literate, aware and thus respectable...

Japanese race and society has greater emphasis on Honor and it is part of their culture, I suppose. Bravo people. Japan is the best country in asia, they came out ruins of WWII in matter of 30 years.

Great country, Great people and Great culture, we can learn a lot of things from them.

More than anything, Japanese have very strong belief in each other, in their social structure. When everything failed, the Samurais took it to themselves and were allowed completely free hand to get rid of the Brits. Later, in WW-II, they were the same Japanese who went Kamikaze on a mass scale out of their belief in the Empire. Nor have we seen any practice in any culture that can be equated with Hara-Kiri.

In certain manners, they are a league of their own.

Really none of the posts give us a clue as to why there is no looting --- some have said it's about honor OR is it DIGNITY, others have suggested because Japanese cooperate -- but WHY do they cooperate??

Yes, of course it has to do with the kinds of values the culture holds, but whatever it is it must be fundamental, basic, because it really is incredible, even if it's not just cases of crass greed and delinquency, there's, to the best of my knowledge, none, no looting. --- We should really look into this and can it and distribute liberally in the sub-continent

I guess they have suffered a lot in past and have been through the conditions before as well and they know panic and looting is gonna bring more sufferings that presenting any solution to any problem..

But what ever it is.. Hats off to Brave Japanese folks..

Japan rocks and its strength lies in its organized population and I am sure we will see Japan back on its feet running at a speed no other can ever imagine. All my good wishes to you Japan...

2 reasons, one is in your post.

2nd is the supermarkets, who are in return in such short supplies are helping the victims by discounting their products. When its normal to suggest, low supply, high prices in most sisuation.
