Why Indian Nuke-Capable missiles are missing from RD Parade

For the third conservative year, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) developed nuclear-capable, surface-to-surface Agni series of Ballistic Missiles have been skipping India’s Republic Day parade where India showcases its full military might to the world to see and notice countries growing Regional power in the subcontinent.

Last Seen in Republic Day parade was Agni V, which is country’s most competent strategic missile and its longest range ballistic range missile which can hit targets beyond 5500 km and with lighter payloads up to 8000 kms which seem to have made some European and Asian allies uneasily of India’s growing missiles arsenal development.

India off lately has been trying to build its support to get membership in Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime), but from 2008 India has failed in its attempts due to non-proliferation hardliners who have been insisting that India first sign Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) treaty before India’s membership can be even considered.

Over the years, non-proliferation hardliners have softened their position on India and Diplomats working on India’s entry have cautioned Indian top leaders to avoid parading of Nuclear capable missiles and to be seen as responsible Nuclear State in the region.

While DRDO has committed to developing ICBMs (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles) with the striking power up to 10,000 km. Indian Military planners have finally accepted that Agni-I (700km) and Agni II (2500), Agni III (3500), Agni-IV (4000km) and Agni-V (5500) series of missiles do provide adequate deterrence against current threat perceptions coming from arch rivals Pakistan and China and India are better of concentrating on development of longer ranged Submarine-launched ballistic missiles and keep its new arsenal of ICBM projects under wrap just for time being.

Maybe because we don't want everyone's attention on the upcoming Surya series. Agni's next generation and next level is Surya ICBMs with over 10-15,000 Km range. Uncle Sam won't be pleased with this development even though it is not targeted against them and is simply an insurance policy.

Getting ballistic missiles in means capturing people's attention in that area.

It is only a matter of when rather than how, that we show Surya to the world. We already have the satellite systems and the technological know-how of long range rocket technology.

It might have something to do with India's claim for a membership in the NSG and MTCR as it said in the article.
As soon as we are confirmed as a member of both these groups then BAM! we will see a surya ICBM or something like that in the next RD parade. Until then we will be all goody poster boy for the Nuclear non-proliferation.

Yeah it is but the NSG and MTCR members loves to see new members with no long range ballistic missiles or ICBM capacity even thought some of them have the capacity to nuke the world twice. And its always helpful to have more certificates in your resume even though the only one that matters are your degree certificate and the college mark-sheets.

If you are confident in your own abilities there is no need to show off to anyone.

Those who need to know about India's capabilties already know,there is no need to be showcasing WMDs during such celebrations IMHO.

In the long term, there will be Chinese bases and assets on far flung shores that need to be targeted in multiple ways. So the capability needs to be developed now.

Boomers are best, but hedging with standard ICBMs is required too.

The US will just happen to be within the coverage too . Doesn't mean they should feel any significant threat from that, just like we dont feel any from their established minutemen and ohio tridents + tomahawks .

LCA is a single engined aircraft and thus not eligable to participate in R-Day flypasts, armoured regiments rotate for R-Day duty so depending on which unit has been tasked they will bring their MBT so either the T-90 or Arjun can take part- it depends on the unit participating.

It's intentional, the GoI instructed the military to cut the parade down to 90 minuets and in the future it will be cut further to 60 mins so even less military hardware will be shown.

As I have said. The IA does not decide on their armoured/tank participation based on the MBT they want to use (T-90/Arjun/T-72) but based on unit rotations. Whatever unit is selected that year will use their tanks, whatever that tank happens to be (T-90/Arjun/T-72) will be the ones that are seen in the parade.

They have been pressuring the UPA regime before this to desist from testing it using various hot and cold methods of coercion.

Think about it; we are the only other major nuclear power (other than you) that doesn't have an in-service missile capable of striking anything beyond Asia and mainland Europe.

Israel, China, Russia, DPRK, UK and France all have it.
