LAHORE, Oct 25: As the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid and Pakistan Peoples Party on Tuesday fielded a joint candidate for a Bahawalpur provincial constituency seat, the leaders of both parties have finalized a new strategy to counter the PML-N in future byelections.
The strategy was devised after joint candidate of the PPP and PML-Q faced defeat at the hands of the PML-N in the Sahiwal PP-220 bypoll with a heavy margin earlier this month. The result gave a boost to the PML-N as it was its first face-off with the two coalition partners who want to contest future elections under a seat adjustment formula.
According to a senior PML-Q leader, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and PML-Qs Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi held a meeting on Sunday last and discussed reasons of the Sahiwal defeat.
He said the prime minister had assured the Chaudhrys that from now on he would personally ensure that the PPP workers actively took part in the election. In the Sahiwal ballot, the PPP leadership reportedly had not motivated its workers and had a lack of coordination with the Q. They agreed not to waste time in finalizing the candidate as they did in Sahiwal.
As the PML-N is in a better position to use the Punjab government machinery in the election, the federal government is left with the option of holding out assurances to the voters, the Q leader said. He said under the new strategy both the PPP and Q ministers and advisers would have meetings with influential personalities of the constituency and assure them of providing funds and jobs for the area people if their candidate won.
In the wake of the PM and Chaudhrys meeting, both coalition partners on Tuesday finalized the name of Chaudhry Ehsanul Haq of the Q for Nov 23 vote in Bahawalpurs PP-275 seat that fell vacant after the death of PML-N candidate Chaudhry Mumtaz Ahmed Jajja.
PML-Q central information secretary Kamil Ali Aga told Dawn that Mr Haq was a strong candidate having the backing of the Q stalwarts like Tariq Bashir Cheema. He said the PML-N would come out of the impression of its popularity in this election as it was not Sahiwal where it could benefit from the Nauraz Shakoor-like factor.
The former PML ticket-holder of the constituency, Chaudhry Mashud Nasir has reportedly assured the Q candidate of his support.
Meanwhile, Chaudhry Shujaat and Parvez Elahi presided over a meeting of the party office-bearers, former nazims and naib nazims from Bahawalpur division at their residence here on Tuesday.
