Ramazan ‘gift’: Govt leaves petroleum prices unchanged for July – The Express Tribune

This is insane. $5m, PIA can rent nearly 25 A320 jets for one month (or 2 a320 for 12 months), or build schools, hospitals etc.

Why keep giving full subsidies? Private cars are a luxury, not a right, be it any month. Gov't should offer subsidies to public transportation, like PIA or make bus fares cheaper.

Here in west, gov't offers money to public transportation, not reduce gasoline prices, be it christmas. If you can't afford petrol, you buy a lesser gas consuming car or use public transportation. This is reason why we have so many old gas guzzler cars in Pakistan because 'subsidized' petrol and CNG. We pay $1.6/litre while Pakistan pays $1.2~. And we dispose off old cars or pay extra to buy electric cars or etc,

Speaking if CNG, Pakistan is top consumer fir cars, after Iran. CNG should be only sold to public transportators, then we can have less 'closure' of CNG stations. This would mean more people using public transportation, less cars on road, less pollution.

Electric subsidy

Give subsidies to small amount of bijli consumer. Since that amount is usually consumed by poor people, using fans or small bulbs. But here you've subsidzied bijli given to shops, such as jewlery shop which use 100 bulbs and AC all day, or households with 24/7 ACs or multiple ACs in house.

AC is a luxury.

When will this culture of subsidy end
Give subsidy to small households or public transportation. Only this way will we have sufficient electricity, sufficient CNG, and less cars and pollution.

Why we keep giving free money to public!

Here is a list of what 500m rupees can do
1) Rent 2 a320 for PIA for 2 years, which can actually raise revenue, tax and profit. Money creating money.
2) Purchase 100-200 brand new buses, with AC. Also raises taxes and profit.
3) Give subsidy to transportation to reduce fare. This will make people with private cars take public transportation.
4) Build a university
5) Build 50 modern schools, with computers, water toilet and maybe even AC
6) Build hospitals or clinics
7) Give to the IDPs, they are far more deserving than any other Pakistani at this moment. Meanwhile Sindh minister gives 50m, federal should give 10x that
8) Build small dams
9) You imagine what else these subsidies for luxury goods can do to Pakistan. We've to come out of subsidy culture. Money belongs to public, not our private usage.

Hear, hear. Tally another stupid policy up.
This is not the way to go. This is not a government's place to do such things.

AC is a luxury. Hell, even an electric fan is luxury, because you can use a manual fan.

Yes and I said give subsidy, but to poor people. Reduce public transportation cost or electricity for small consumers. Why does every pakistani gets subsidy? Not everyone is poor.

In Pakistan, almost every tom dick and harry gets to have AC and cars. This means more traffic on road and more pollution.

In Europe, people tend to take train or bus if travelling single. Otherwise it's public transportation. But in Pakistan, you'll see so many drivers with one or two people, some people hoping in for nothing.

See Japan, another example. Gov't is rich enough to offer subsidies, but people ride bicycles. This way they save environment and less cars on the road, less pollution too.

Now look at lahore, filled with smog that airplane can't land sometimes.

Because if the government does not give subsidy, the prices of every commodity goes up. Everything relies on oil prices. If the price of oil goes up, everything goes up, which hurts the people's pocket. Government knows that it has the cash to bear the burden, but the people wouldnt be able to. Thats why they decided to give the subsidy and keep the prices to their present level.

This is not only this month they're giving subsidy, but have before. For example, they reduce gasoline prices! They could've left it unchanged.

Food or other item goes up as result of massive inflation we're seeing. If you've to provide subsidy, provide to public transportation or select transporting companies for goods. If you give subsidy to every single person, it is not a good idea. Plus whos to say subsidy will reduce prices? We've lots of greedy people. In west, markets put sale during christmas but in Ramadan, prices go up, because 'it's the time to make money' instead of 'it's the time to give'

Lastly, till when will we keep offering subsidy due to fear of goods price being increased? The public needs to take the pill and swallow one time price increase vs gov't losing money year after year.

Yes I fully agree. I am not in favor of subsidies. If you want to give subsidy, lets give it to our education, transport and energy sector. I dont like it when the govt gives subsidy on edible goods, because at the end of the day, there will still be millions of people who cant afford some edible goods that are already subsidized. So it doesnt really serves the purpose.
