There is a picture published in almost evry big media in Europe and USA. It shows a baby elephant screaming with pain, his entire back is in fire. His mother runs infront it, also screaming and its foot catched fire as well. Behind that you see a mob pf savages hunting those two.

The picture is named "welcome in hell" and won an award.

The backlash in the media is enormous. People comment that indians are absolute savages. That the EU pays them 1 billion development money per year and this should stop.

The picture itself is hard to endure...

Are indians aware, that things like this destroy their entire renomee? Do they realize, what image they get in the world, first by the massive rape cases over there and now by burning baby elephants?

Written by a russian women anastasia who lived in india for 20 years.Source is the comments section of OP,s link.
"Stop any foreign aid to these Stone Age Savages. Lived in India for 20 years. Left in disgust. My house in Goa was surrounded by a beautiful deep fores. There was many monkeys, foxes, wild rabbits even a couple of peacocks. Then workers from Karnataka came and to save money on gas they made cooking fire from forest wood.I used to walk my dogs and saw them cutting tress, i used to scream at them. Within a year a third of the forest was gone, it had a big opening barren land so depressing. The lake we used to swim became their toilet. Once on Holi me and my son got attacked by a drunk angry mob who started throwing fireworks at us driving a bike.A policeman saved us. My friend's little girl got molested by a local boy. Weeping for India and the hellhole it has become.Hope they get their karma"

well it hard to civilize when you don't provide basic health care, social care, jobs, education for all, etc.
it is country of everyone for themselves literally. the wealthy don't mind few dead animals or deforest to get money for resources.

i am gona play the devil's advocate here, not because i am in love with Indians or someting like that but i would prefer to give people the benefit of doubt.

This is just 1 image and nowhere in the article does it say that they were trying to burn baby elephants or that this was a religious ritual. As per the article the people are trying to steer the elephants away from human settlements and they are using firecrackers and flaming tar balls to scare the elephants.

The situation in India is such that their population is getting out of control and when human populations increase then obviously it needs more room to house them and this room for human settlements is achieved usually at the expense of the wildlife and fauna.

Another thing to keep in mind that this issue is not just confined to India. The same thing happened in the States where the American Bison was almost completely wiped out and also the American mountain lion which is now on the endangered list. In Australia, humans have killed of the Tasmanian tiger which was the only large indigenous carnivorous animal on the continent.

So before making judgement call based on 1 picture, try doing some research to get the facts, if you can't do that then atleast give people the benefit of doubt.

@ValerioAurelius I know about this incident. Incident happened some km from my home. Its shocking and disturbing. People who have done this are arrested and case is going on.
But you know elephants are increasing in number. The forest which used to sustain them are not able to do so.
More and more they are coming to human settlements for food. A single elephant can eat over a hector of rice a day. If its a herd they can bring havoc. Even they raise buildings for food.
Wild elephants are more dangerous than tigers. In our area only around 20 people dies every year due to elephant attack.
This is where the conflict is happening. People are trying to protect their hard earned crop by all their means, even they are using illegal ways, like the one in this case.
Govt, it trying all means to protect them. You can get away by killing a man, but not with harming a elephant.
Pakistanis should take a serious measure to protect wild life in Pakistan. Elephant, Tiger is extinct. Licences are given to people for a game to kill Kharchal.

when population in a county goes beyond control and there are no laws in the name of freedom of speech then people become crooks and idiots comparable to a group of donkeys out of all kind of frustration. And then they end up doing such things.

I knew about elephants being poached for their tusks but this is down right messed up.

The photographer says the calf wasn't set on fire intentionally.

Whenever elephants encroach into human settlements, the forest officials hire people to drive them away. These people use fireballs to scare them away. So what you see is a fireball acting up. The elephant's hair must have caught fire.

Elephants attacking people is very common.
