Why Did India Lose 1962 War With China?
Ranabir Bhattacharyya February 26, 2018
Post independence, Jawaharlal Nehru’s India faced humiliating defeat against the Chinese forces. Not only it was embarrassing but also a strong reminder how the hopelessness of Indian politicians who were poor strategists, especially against the mighty Chinese.
In all these years, the Congress Party, as well as the Gandhi family, dismissed the true fact that Jawaharlal Nehru was solely responsible for India’s defeat in 1962.
Very recently, top-secret military classified documents in Henderson Brooks report exposed the role of Jawaharlal Nehru categorically in the huge debacle. Anyhow, there is no question of credibility of Henderson Brooks, who was the Commanding Officer in the western front. Lieutenant Henderson Brooks submitted the review as Army Chief JN Choudhari ordered him to do so.
The documents clearly reveal that the Chinese forces strengthened their position in Tibet and Indian border prior to the face off. This gives the Chinese an added advantage even before the Indians could proceed with their own foundation in the border.
Jawaharlal Nehru’s flawed ‘Forward Policy’ didn’t help the cause of the Indian Army and it was indeed a hara-kiri to go ahead with the direct military operation against the mighty Chinese. The flawed Nehruvian tactics of deploying heavy troops and patrolling teams in the border antagonized the Chinese and there was no looking back after that.
Most, unfortunately, the central government under Jawaharlal Nehru and the military think tank failed to come up with a feasible solution via the diplomatic channel and that resulted in great despair.
The most unfortunate aspect of the 1962 war is that Jawaharlal Nehru was the sole reason behind the number of casualties. The aggressive attitude of the erstwhile Indian government without proper dynamics of the military perspective didn’t help to tackle the situation at all.
The 7 Infantry Brigade was pushed in without specific arrangements. It is still shocking to know that the Jawaharlal Nehru government was absolutely sure that the Chinese won’t opt for military retaliation and thus the debacle was more a Heartbreaking one for the Indians.
Anyhow, without any confusion, it can be clearly stated that Jawaharlal Nehru has to be blamed for the biggest embarrassment of the Indian Army jawans.
