Why 7-Eleven Failed In Indonesia

Indonesia's first 7-Eleven opened in 2009 and became a popular hangout spot for consumers. At their peak in the Southeast Asian country, they numbered 190 stores, offering free Wi-Fi and a seating area for guests while selling fresh local meals and traditional 7-Eleven snacks like the Slurpee. Despite the chain's popularity, the franchisee, PT Modern Internasional, shuttered all remaining 161 stores there in 2017.

You know friend, that is it; we look out for these foriegn brands. Instead we need to support local.

Here - let us start-> KFC/McD are 2nd/third tier to local franchises such as Nandos, Chicken Licken, FishAways, Steers, Denoairs etc you name it; there is a better local franchise that has been foreign competition both in terms of quality and service.

Strongly agree, I am a staunch supporter of local industries and products.

Agree, and from my experience last few visits to Pakistan going to McDonald's I see people upper class acting as if they in a 5 star joint, when in the U.S. it's considered lower tiered. It's more of the mind set that foreign is always good and upper class. I almost felt sorry looking at my countrymen for acting like retards there sadly.

Local and authentic always beat the fast food joints.

To be fair McDonald's of Pakistan is far superior to its American counterpart, at least according to my friends who are settled in the US and come here for vacation. McDonald's is marketed and run as a premium fast food chain in Pakistan. Watch this video below, look how radically different both of these McDonald's are. In India McDonald's is marketed and run as a cheap fast food but in Pakistan it is run as a premium fast food restaurants. Also upper class don't eat that much McDonald's, it is the wannabe rich middleclass that mostly goes there.

Right now we have started seeing a lot of local high class restaurant and local fast food chains across cities like Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. My favorite local fast food chain is definitely OPTP(One Potato Two Potato).

Elites rarely eat McDonald's, elites go to extremely expensive high class restaurants. Only wannabe rich middleclass go to McDonald's. By the way I live right to a McDonald's but I never eat from there. The burgers that I make at home are far superior to that of any fast food chain.

Quality level of McDonald's is different for each country. This depends on whether McDonald's is being run as cheap food chain or a premium food chain? In Pakistan, McDonald's is being run as a premium fast food chain hence the quality control is excellent for a McDonald's. McDonald's here smell clean and fresh despite being crowded.

Sir you should visit Pakistan and see this for yourself. In terms of food there is so much to explore here. Nowadays you will find all sorts of cuisines here such as Italian, French, Spanish, Mexican, Arabian, Chinese(both authentic and Pakistani version of it) etc. However, what a tourist should be exploring here is the Pakistani cuisine.

Indonesia 7-11 is a bad store, unlike 7-11 in other countries.

No wonder it failed.

Just see and visit it, I know it's going to fail, ...so empty.

Unlike Indomaret and Alfamart, they are more like the real 7-11 just like in other countries.

Are these local filling convinience stores?

Here we have big highway stops for decades now; full service - meals, filling station etc.

Please do post indonesian chain food stores - local ones.

When i was in bandung, i mostly ate in local places; really good food. only interesting aspect i found, the food was never warmed up; but then i went to had some good street food especially on friday evenings.

It has failed in many areas of the US too. It eventually got sold to a Japanese company. Most of the 7-11's in the areas I know have closed. Probably due to CVS competition (~10,000 stores) which is far nicer. BTW the Simpsons crappy "Qwik-E-Mart" with Apu and the old hotdogs on rollers with flies is a dig on 7-11.

Hey @Gomig-21 what's your take on 7-11?
I noticed the other day the one in Allston near the Harvard Stadium has closed. I can't say I have been in them much as it is basically the same as walking into a little gas station mart.

Edit: Wow...looking at the map there still seems to be many around. I guess they are low profile.

Yup in Jakarta we have plenty streetfood, and Today we have even the expensive ones, with the price same like Western brand like KFC or McDonald.

We also have many local restaurant and in Indonesia Padang restaurant from West Sumatran are dominating, they are every where....he he. I just need to walk to get them and not even one, but three located near by he he.

You can buy food with chicken with 1 1/2 Dollar
