Acknowledging India’s “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” translating to Clean India Mission, the World Health Organisation (WHO) stated that this initiative could save up-to three lakh lives. The WHO stated that if India fulfils its commitment to have a 100% coverage in terms of safe sanitation by 2019, then a large number of deaths could be prevented, which includes deaths from diarrhoea-related diseases and malnutrition.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was catapulted by the Narendra Modi government in the year 2014. India is committed to achieving a comprehensive safe sanitation scenario by October 2019. The WHO has conducted a study on the health impacts of the Swachh Bharat Mission and the inferences are promising.

As per the inferences from the study, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has pushed India towards safe sanitation and the determination to put a complete end to open defecation. These efforts and results could further lead to a scenario wherein the deaths due to protein-energy malnutrition and diarrhoea might witness a significant downfall.

If the calculations made by the World Health Organisation are anything to go by then the Swachh Bharat Mission could lead to 14 million more years of life in the period measured.

It is noteworthy that before the launch of this particular cleanliness and sanitation mission in India, there were around 199 million cases of diarrhoea per year. The model-based study of the WHO infers that this problem will be completely eliminated after India adopts a universal use of safe sanitation choices.

The WHO also underlined the fact that under this campaign of Narendra Modi, household sanitary coverage has seen a remarkable enhancement. The WHO does not just see India reaping the benefits out of this campaign but sees the entire South East Asia being a beneficiary to it. In the last budget allocation, an additional $15000 crores were dedicated to the Swachh Bharat Mission by WHO.

93% rural households with access to toilets using them

Good for India but toilet problem is unique to India. No where else in South Asia such poor sanitation system exists where >50% population has to pee on the roads, railway lines and open fields.
93 % people in India have just access to toilet. It is also a fact that at times 70-90 people have just access to one toilet. Its not even talking complete sanitation. But sure something to celebrate for India.

Corruption in Swachh Bharat raises a stink

I would also ask you to read this, its not just building a toilet its also maintenance and promotion of culture to use it as well,

Why Swacch Bharat Type Schemes Will Fail in India

Eh some parts of South Asia like Sri Lanka have had 100% sanitation for several decades now, And places like Bangladesh and Bhutan etc have had way better coverage in sanitation and safe drinking water than India for years as well.. What a BS heading

Yep and there are things unique to other countries, say Polio, the disease spreads through fecal-oral route. But fortunately, India is polio-free. Presense of polio is a clear sign of poor sanitation. Please do check conditions of sanitation in some other countries around the region.

Sure it's something to be celebrated, as Modi promised, he builds more toilets than temples. :)

Looks like it's in the wrong place, some 2 years old article for self-satisfaction won't help. Now have a good cry and jog on.

It does, there are many infections that spreads through 'you know' and contamination of water bodies is again an issue. Yes, Sri Lanka is fully santised but that doesn't mean you are immune to such infections given the people-people interaction. So, unless such conditions are eradicated completely, then only the region is safe. Not in the way that, you can take an example from us.

Actually Bangladesh improved sanitation rate is lower than India by fair amount....they just expanded their unimproved rate to get to 100% (and of course one has to trust them, they AFAIK have not done WHO follow up vetting of their pit latrine usage rate etc).

Sri Lanka yes has done quite well, but it is small % of the south asian population. The headline I think has more to do with India being the largest population in South Asia, so it improving is a boon for South Asia (average) as a whole.

You mean we should protect smugglers who -
1. Attack & kill farmers and their family.
2. Steal their cattle & kill anyone, even police.
3. Rape cattle before butchering & eating them.

Let us know since when self defense and protecting your property and family became a crime?

What you do to your cow does not interest me.
But a bunch of smugglers killing farmers & stealing their cows - Yes, they will get killed and they deserve every bit they are getting.

Choosing between a cow and smuggler is not choice for me.

Hummmm , yes all those isolated incidents are terrorist act but killing of hundreds and one go is OK for many people. Some people always wants to see the bad things of others with microscope to magnify it. They becomes ostrich while seeing their own problem, weakness and in the process becomes shits. They are useless for anything except bluffing and bragging.

Anyway, we are coming up with a massive drive to providing health cover to 550 million people in the world's biggest plan on health. Huge numbers of people will get an insurance cover for health and health of people will improve like anything.
