Islamabad judge killed by bodyguard’s panic firing

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan stunned the National Assembly on Thursday with the information that an additional district and sessions judge killed during a gun and suicide bomb attack on Islamabad’s district courts complex on Monday was the victim of claimed panic firing by his own bodyguard inside a bolted retiring room.

He said the guard had confessed to police that three bullets fired by him in panic from a 9mm pistol after an attacker’s suicide bomb blast near the court room killed judge Rafaqat Ahmed Khan Awan – one of 12 fatalities in one of the capital’s worst terrorist carnage in recent years that also wounded 28 people.

Mr Awan, his guard and the court reader had taken refuge in the judge’s retiring room after the attack by at least two gunmen, according to the minister’s account based on police investigations.

He said the guard stood behind the bolted door holding a loaded official pistol that he fired in panic after the nearby explosion and “unluckily this awful incident happened”.

The minister rejected some previous reports that the attackers had broken the court’s door before shooting at the judge or that the judge could been targeted because he did not entertain a murder complaint against former president Pervez Musharraf relating to the killing of a cleric at Islamabad’s famous Red Mosque during a military operation against militants hiding there in July 2007.

But the minister said another judge could have been an intended target of the attackers, but that judge did come to his court on that day.

Although he could not tell for now who was behind the attack, Chaudhry Nisar said: “We will God-willing find them in whatever hole they may be hiding and bring them to justice.”—Raja Asghar

It was evident from day one that PML(N) has TTP(alias JI/JUI) sympathizers within its own ranks. As long as PML(N) is in power, one can forget about a comprehensive and sustained operation against the terrorists. At this point, PML(N)'s attention is to maintain the status quo, not take any action against the terrorist outfits, and make as much money from the mega projects during its 5-years tenure, and leave just like PPP did. It is a no-brainer where they priorities of a businessman lay. PML(N) is trying its best to protect Punjab from the reaction of TTP (alias JI/JUI), which is inevitable if a comprehensive action was taken against the rebel outfit. Imran on the other hand, is a slave of his own ethnic bias, and will never agree on an operation that will result in the killing of his brethern, Pashtoon (TTP leadership, and terrorists are predominantly Pashtoon). So the situation will remain as is, Pakistanis will continue to die, the economy will continue to sink.

I will urge members to read these fine articles to see how nations fight against terrorism and achieve prosperity.

ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah on Friday said the military would be blamed if the government's talks with the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) end in failure, DawnNews reported.

Speaking to media representatives, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader said he opposed the inclusion of military representatives in the new government committee.

Shah said Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan's statement implying that judge Rafaqat Ahmed Khan Awan died as a result of panic firing by his own bodyguard was irresponsible and unfortunate.

On Thursday, Nisar had told the National Assembly that the guard had confessed to police that three bullets fired by him in panic from a 9mm pistol after an attacker’s suicide bomb blast near the court room killed the judge — one of 12 fatalities in one of the capital’s worst terrorist carnage in recent years that also wounded 28 people.

Shah said on Friday that the interior minister was calling terrorists as patriots, adding that such statements would drive the opposition to take on an offensive posture.

"We want democracy to sustain...but that should not be regarded as a weakness on our part," Shah said, adding that the opposition was being criticised as too friendly and not critical enough.

What is the punishment for telling lie in parliament? Do it come under treason as it's breach of oath?

there is no prescribed punishment in this case as far as I know, but resignation is what a civilized man would do..

Lying in front of parliament is a breach of oath in most nations but then again not every nation is a Banana Republic like Pakistan.
