I think it depends upon where you are and where you are from. It can be a real Twilight Zone experience when you jump from one extreme to the other.

Case in point...a woman I know and her husband (both white) traveled from Boston, Massachusetts (North) to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (South)

They stay at a hotel in Myrtle Beach.

They are hanging out relaxing at the edge of the pool and some attendant comes out and says "hey can't you white folks read...the pool closes at 6". My friends look at each other with a "yikes???".

Later they are in their room and the cleaning lady (black) knocks on the door. They open the door and say the room is ok and they don't really need any cleaning. The cleaning lady says she should at least empty the trash so my friends grab the trash barrels and hand them to her. She says "Hey you are pretty nice for white folk". Again my friends look at each other in befuddlement.

So they had a bunch of that happen and they felt like they had stepped into a time machine and were sent back 50 years.
