White House orders government agencies to begin shutting down

WASHINGTON: The White House budget director late Monday ordered federal agencies to begin closing down after Congress failed to pass a budget to avert a government shutdown.

"Agencies should now execute plans for an orderly shutdown due to the absence of appropriations," said Sylvia Mathews Burwell, director Of the White House Office of Management and Budget in a memo.

The order was issued 10 minutes before the US government officially ran out of money after a day of angry brinkmanship between the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and the Senate, where Democrats have the majority.

Burwell urged Congress to pass a temporary operating budget as soon as possible to allow departments to reopen. "We urge Congress to act quickly to pass a Continuing Resolution to provide a short-term bridge that ensures sufficient time to pass a budget for the remainder of the fiscal year, and to restore the operation of critical public services and programs that will be impacted by a lapse in appropriations."

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama in his address to the military on this occasion told members of the military he'll work to get Congress to re-open the government as soon as possible.

Obama is addressing troops in a video message after Congress missed a midnight deadline to avert a partial government shutdown.

Obama says troops in uniform will remain on duty as usual. He says he's signed a law ensuring troops get paid on time. He says ongoing operations in Afghanistan and elsewhere will continue and the U.S. will ensure those in harm's way have what they need.

But Obama says Defense Department civilians may be furloughed. He says that compounds the damage from spending cuts that have already affected the military.

Hundreds of thousands of government workers will be off the job Monday, but some essential services will continue.

The US had a financial crisis in 2007 and that turned into a economic crisis in 2008 and since 2011 the US has been in a political crisis. The political crisis in the US stems from the fact that both parties understand that the current situation is untenable and there needs to be changes. But neither party has a real plan for it because either they don't understand what is happening in the economy or they lack the courage to do what is right as that involves a lot of pain. Hints the deadlocks in Washinton DC because no one knows what to do and just dump and criticize the plan of the other. The next step for the US will be a social crisis where your going to see violence in the streets. For the past 5 years the US had the world largest wealth transfer in human history from the poor to the rich and is still continuing today.

But wait till gambit comes and tells us that this is pretty normal and nothing will happen to US. All is well.

Seems like fall of the Roman Empire. They should thank their stars for not putting their hand in Syrian crisis. It would have added fuel to the fire. A country with a debt more then their economy is like a bubble which can burst anytime. If they refrain from trying to act as policeman, there will be much more peace in the world and better economic stability globally.

The U.S. has a chance to remain a great power, but they need to make great sacrifices.
For example, through the Civil War and eventually turn into the American Empire - the classic empire, Christian, without any talk about democracy and liberalism.
I'm not sure that they have the strength and determination to do so.
