When will India host the Olympics?

Hosting the Olympics is a big waste of time and waste of money.

...so best to leave hosting Olymoics to the rich countries or those who really need to show-off.

Unless you're a developed nation with plenty of cash to spare, It's just going to benefit corrupt politiciansand to enhance thier ego's and will leave the state coffers in further debt, The argument that by holding global sporting events encourages the locals to pursue and excel in sports have been proven null and void over and over again, If thats the case India should be a Athletic powerhouse after the Commonwealth Games or Greece after the Olympics and South Africa would be the top football playing nation in the world

Apart from sports, Olympics are basically a show of Opulence, esp the opening ceremony, it is to show that "you have arrived". I think China utilized this really well. Quite similar to a massive wedding or other functions.

Not interested. We are still reeling from the corruption of Commonwealth Games in 2010, and most of the facilities are starting to get unused. Waste of money.

If ever India wants to host it, do it in Delhi. We can now tell with so confidence, that Delhi City is in most worse shape than other Metros. Mumbai has improved. I hope some Olympics can clean up our capital city.

We don't have a system where any other sport other than cricket is encouraged! There are exceptions but still. We can have a bloody good infrastructure but what's the point of hosting if we can get more medals?

No one makes money by 'hosting' a party. All they get in return is puke, trash and messed up house. No one travels to watch the games anymore. Those interested just watch it on TV, Most don't watch it at all. Its a total waste.

I have to admit, I'm quite surprised by the response from the Indian members here. It wasn't very long ago that almost every Indian person I came across online wanted India to host the Olympics. There were many articles written in the Indian press on this topic, and the consensus was when, not if, India should host the games. The consensus was that India should host the Olympics by 2020 or 2024 at the latest.

Why the sudden reverse of public opinion on this matter? What happened?

I get that watching football is a big thing in India now - all the major european leagues being live on TV is proof of that, but in terms of playing - it's still a regional thing, right? I'm happy to be corrected.

Mind you, they gave the WC to Qatar of all places - so who knows

Football is popular far as European leagues are concerned, especially EPL, who seem to have loads of fans. But you are correct that, in terms of playing, football is a regional sport in South Asia. For India, it was West Bengal. In Bangladesh, football was the dominant sport for a long time until cricket overtook it.

In fact, cricket is so dominant in South Asia that it has overtaken every other sport in popularity, including field hockey.

When is the time optimal? As of now organizing such an event will not have a happy ending. The performance of the athletes in Rio is proof of an unstable talent pool that is severely let down by the state and corrupt officials. The commonwealth games in 2010 was a looters paradise and reflects an unwillingness from the government officials to take national 'face' seriously.

2038 perhaps? Forget about making money from the olympics, the benefits are intangible but they do exist. Indian athletes winning medals might instill in the population a national pride and break down the barriers between castes and regionalism as Im sure the population will cheer all Indians regardless of social background and demographic.

after commonwealth scandal indians are quite apprehensive about the capability of govt to host any game... so much so that we did not bid for any regional games like asian.. it will take some time to recover from that.

Too much money will be wasted building stadiums,enclosures & tracks nobody will use after the Olympics are after!

Add to that the final costs for the Olympics are NEVER anywhere close to what the Initial projections are!
They always increase due to inflation or "unforeseen circumstances" & corrupt+inefficient ministers & bureaucrats

& if these games cover to India,we will be a left with a bill larger than the Sochi Olympics & be left with too many financial problems like the Greeks were after the Athens Olympics & the Canadians were after Montreal

Those Olympics standard stadiums and stuff will surely be used later, no doubts in it. India is not Greece. If Greece can host with no loss/little profit then India too if can attract tourists (which i am sure can) and broadcasting rights and other activities can generating revenue too. There are Far Cheaper options for building National pride and bringing down barriers between people.

The ROI for Olympics is just not there. Pretty much the reason why most Indians neither train for the Olympics nor watch it.

How?

Will we find someone to use them most of the time if not all the time? & will they be used for future games. Every organiser wants a new stadium built . Most of the times these stadiums remain unused...

Greece faced quite some losses & a huge bill right.

Same with Brazil. This thing is too expensive for us.

Unless we are the location for the next 3 games/Permanent one. We shouldn't get it
